Harvesting Beets

Ozark, MO(Zone 6a)

I guess I've messed up. I planted two long rows of Early Wonder Tall Top beets this spring, and I've been waiting for them to get big enough to pull.

They're healthy looking plants about 18" high and they show no sign of wilting or bolting to seed - but few of the beets are even 1" in diameter, and most are 1/2" to 3/4".

I checked back on my calendar, and these are now 77 days from planting and they're supposed to be a 60-day beet. I guess I'll pull them tomorrow and hope they're not woody and that we can at least use these small ones.

I've grown other beet varieties in the past, and I was waiting for these to get a couple of inches in diameter - so I lost track of the time. I don't think I'll grow this variety again, has anybody here had any experience with it?

I have grown it and it is a good beet. About as early as any. Does not get as large as some, but a good table size. O f the cultivars that I have tried, I would rate rate it as a C+. If I liked beet greens I would rate it an A, because that is where this cultivar really excels. As a side note, all beets here, planted the first of March, take 90+ days to maturity.

Really? I was going to pull these today, but maybe I'd better hold off. They're only 1/3 the size of the ones in your picture. I planted them March 22, so they're 78 days now.

My soil is good and rich, they've had plenty of water, and they look fine - just no size to the roots. We haven't used any of the beet tops for greens because I've got a couple of rows of chard and we like that real well.
