My mouth is watering for a lollipop!
Is it too late to plant bulbs now? I don't expect it to flower, but wouldn't want to waste my $ if it would kill it. I am so excited that these beauties grow here. I am paying special attention to Steve FW for what does well.(I think it was seeing your pics that even made me realize I could grow them here!)

Greenwood, IN(Zone 5b)

Thanks bananna :-) Looks like you are doing quite well by yourself! I like any of the Asiatics and Orienpets (OT's). Orientals will bloom but the heat tears them up pretty quickly and the OT's are much, much stronger and put up with a lot more. You'll find the Asiatics and LA (Longiflorum x Asiatic hybrid) also do very nicely and put up with our conditions well, and bloom somewhat earlier than the OT's. The trumpet lilies are nice too. You'll find that if your soil is well drained and reasonably nutrient-healthy you'll get good multiplication and perennialization on the Asiatics, LA's and OT's all. I'm already getting some orders together for the fall!

Speaking of planting times here, I strongly recommend you plant in the fall - and late fall is better than early fall. I usually wait until sometime in November or even early December. If you plant too early, if they'd been kept in any kind of cold storage they might emerge early and then an early spring freeze could do them in for the year (the bulb will be OK but the shoots do not tolerate temps much below freezing and will blacken and die). If you plant in springtime, I would not plant as a rule later than April as the soil gets too warm for them to root well, and though they may bloom, they won't develop much size to them. I did plant some I got at the IA roundup in May and one has flowered and another had buds, but with the heat this year I would definitely avoid planting right now. If you water much you could set conditions for rotting as they won't be able to root well until the weather cools. Good luck!

Oh I think I found out what the yellow one like this is - it's still blooming too - American Flame!

Lily_Love, I really like your orange and white Asiatic. Did y say your Casa Blanca's do not open for you until late July? I will be interested to see how yours returns - I remember seeing your pics from last year.

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

Yes Steve, Casa Blanca is the last Oriental to bloom in our hot humid weather. Thanks goodness it does well here though. I moved mine last fall, if mine cease one season of bloom. My neighbor has some. I'll be on the looking out for hers. lol.

Ceres double Asiatic is just starting to bloom here. It seems to multipy rapidly.

Does this look like a disease or just too much rain? Some of these stems have brown moist looking leaves about 6" below the buds. The leaves along the lower part of the stem and right below the buds looks OK.

Greenwood, IN(Zone 5b)

That is nice, Susan. I have never tried any of the doubles!

Hmm that is strange. Usually I have seen the leaves yellow and fall off starting from the bottom up if they get too much water. I have never seen it happen at that point on the stalk! Maybe someone will chime in with an answer.

Lisbon, IA(Zone 5a)

Was that one that got frost damage earlier in the year?

Western, WI(Zone 4a)

Susan, what a gorgeous DB. asiatic. Didn't know they had one in that color. Have had a couple of them since they came on the market, but never saw that one offered.

I have a lily that kinda looks like that, and believe it was frost.

I love the A.W. very much. Drooling on the keyboard here, Steve.

Looked outside this morning after a big storm to find the aftermath of what must have been a mini microburst in our back yard. Things flung around everywhere, plants here and there flattened by wind and, worst of all, a big, heavy, long, wooden planter box had been hurled right on top of one of my lily beds. I feel worse than silly even mentioning it with so many of our DG friends suffering horrendously from storms, but, nonetheless, I confess I let out a blood curdling scream that terrified my husband and little daughter, who came running with quivering lip to see who'd died. I leapt to action and was soon running around in my underwear rescuing plantlife in the rain. Many lily stems had been flattened, which I staked, but only a few broke off entirely. Meanwhile, there were rewards in the garden too: the martagons had started opening up, and they're perfectly upright and lovely. They're perfect!

Who but you guys would understand? I ask you.

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

wickerparker, living by the lake, and I think I know what you were referring to as 'Microburst' It's strange to actually witness such phenomina! (reflect on the water surface). Hope most of the lilies survived as your Martagons.

Greenwood, IN(Zone 5b)

Thanks Kim,

I had wondered where they were since I ordered several of the "American" series lilies from W.F.F., and lo and behold here they are. I love them too - and in fact ordered a dozen more A.W. for delivery this fall.

Wickerparker, we understand :-) Totally! I keep an eye on mine like a hawk when we have storms - not that I'll be able to do much! I am glad most of your lilies came through OK.

We are having terrible heat and drought but I am not going to complain with what our friends to the north are going through!

Steve, I'm so bad, sometimes I can't tell one yellow OT from another, unless they are labeled and blooming in my own yard at the same time. I remember 'Altaville' having a huge and I mean HUGE flower. Whatever you've got there of yellows, I think look fabulous!

wickerparker...that sounds EXACTLY like something that would happen here. I have been known to head out to rescue things in lightning wind and downpours. What a nice surprise, those martagons blooming for you, unscathed. We all need some of that these days.

And you know, Steve, I'd send you some water from here if I could. Wouldn't it be a whole lot easier if things worked out that way?

Enjoying the blooms from you all here. They are a bit of light during some dark days here.

jmorth, Lilies and Tulips combo a perfect setting. I'm in zonal envy big time. But happy for you.

See, I knew you'd all understand. Thank you very much for that.

jmorth, I don't know how you do it. My Zeuses still have a long way to go. Beautiful lilies...

Divernon, IL(Zone 5b)

Lily_love, those are faux tulips- as they're actually annual poppies. However, when my first lily, Good Night bloomed, a couple of feet away, my last tulips (Deidre) were still in bloom. Thanks wickerparker, you should be coming into your own soon. I'm anticipating a barrage of pics as you and our northern neighbors in Iowa and Wisconsin start to unfurl a plethora of blooming lily wonders. I would be remiss should I fail to note how pleasing it has been to view all the southern lilies from Steve, Kim, and company.
J

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

Thanks J. for the clarification. I haven't had much success as many of my fellow gardeners in the South with poppies. I adore them nevertheless.

Waiting, waiting for my first 'Silk Road' to unfurl.
