It was a gorgeous day here for the second day in a row. Our house is currently jacked up to remove some crumbling foundation sills (of all the nerve!...after only 250+ years!) and I have been scurrying to remove many plants from around the foundation so they won't be destroyed and planting them in other places. The yard has been transformed into a dry rot junkyard and a workshop everywhere. This stuff is really fascinating to see how they solve the stumbling blocks of an ancient house. I'm saying "Gulp!" a lot though.
Today's Weather in Your Garden - 22
yeah that would make me panic too... where's the pictures???
Vic, I just read your comment you are right! hehe, over 90 please, water that is hehehehehe, Clem
61 with mixed clouds and sun. Shaping up to be an absolutely perfect day with highs near 80.
Louise - That sounds like quite a project. I can't even imagine!
Louise:
I'm afraid that we will have to be doing the very same thing sooner rather than later.
The weather today is
Partly Cloudy and 57°
Wind: NE at 6
Humidity: 67%
Dewpoint: 54°
Pressure: 30.02 in. and falling
We are supposed to get rain tonight and into tomorrow, if I remember correctly from yesterday's weather reports on TV. Of course, we are due to attend a Father's Day BBQ at DSIL's parents' house tomorrow!
77 and muggy.
81 here and for humidity Weatherbug reports "N/A". How I wish it was N/A!
Happy Flag Day!!
Yes! We've got our flag flying and hope everyone else does, too.
"And I’m proud to be an American,
where at least I know I’m free.
And I wont forget the men who died,
who gave that right to me.
And I gladly stand up,
next to you and defend her still today.
‘ Cause there ain’t no doubt I love this land,
God bless the USA".
Great photo, Pirl!!
Thanks for the reminder! We just put the flag out, too.
Love the pic, pirl!
Ditto to what Victor said !
alll my flags went out yesterday too
I love that photo of Jack, Arlene!
76 currently, humidity at 68%. Kinda hazy looking.
Well, I'm done working outdoors. That sun is brutal and at 83 degrees with 60% humidity, I am kaput!!! If it does rain, I really hope the sun doesn't come back out to steam things up even worse.
Started out fine but drizzle and very humid. Plants are luvin it.
How cute! I miss the little ones I had last year.
Cute! Cute!
Thanks for the nice words. I'll tell Jack.
The good old red, white and blue makes anything look good to me.
Why was your son's t-ball game disgusting, Victor? Or is it the flag? (As a poor canuck, I may be misunderstanding something . . . maybe the flag is hung at the wrong angle . . . please help me out ^_^)

Flags here at 1/2 staff. Tim Russert was a fixture on Nantucket and was always helping local charity events. Good guy. . David Halberstam was an enormous loss for many of us last year. Both great observers of the political world. Sad.
Spent most of the day cleaning up the GH and re-potting many things. I think I am going to leave my large collection of Hippeastrum and Epiphyllum in this year for the summer. It means more watering, but less hauling in and out. I got rid of lots of Junk. Where does it all come from?
I have yet to plant my cannas, but they are now out next to the beds they are going into. A start. Glads not yet planted, and only a few seedlings that are still small have yet to go in. Making progress, but so are the weeds. Patti
Allison, Nancy and Candyce - we have taken some photos, but I need to figure out how to load them onto my DH's computer so I can show you what you have to look forward to, Candyce. So far, the wrap-around porch has been removed, and in 3 rooms I can see light under the walls from inside the house. Oh MY!
Victor - why was the game disgusting?
Pirl - very nice photo of Jack and thanks for posting that appropriate sentiment.
Mama - what a sweet little visitor!
Just finished a good downpour here. About 1/2 inch. The game was not disgusting, the weather was. This is the weather thread!
Getting ready to rain here. A few drops got us as we picked asparagus, yet again.
Going for a colonial??
Victor - we're just hoping to keep our colonial standing! LOL It is the original part that was built in 1763 that is in trouble.
Hope all goes well! Please post more photos of the work. It's great to keep history alive.
I so agree! We have some very old homes near us and I'm always happy to see the new owners taking good care.
We had a terrible thunderstorm come through early this evening. The first strike was so close, it made my toes tingle. Scary!
DonnieBrook, That is an old house. I am amazed that they just jack them up to fix them. Our Vt house is a young one compared to yours, 1790. But it was moved off the top of the mountain in the 1820s to where it is now which is a few miles away. I assume with skids and oxen. All the old houses in Williamsville, Newfane and South Newfane were moved down to the river at that time. I love seeing the post and beam exposed, but I especially love the scallop trim on your home. Did you have to move tons of plants?
The fog rolled in and it actually is cool. We need rain, but I didn't count on it tonight and watered today. Patti
DD went nuts when she saw the photo of your house Louise. Patti, share pictures.
Pretty exciting to see your house like that. I'm sure it will be fine but I'd be biting my nails about now. Soft rain here tonite so far! I worked all day on the gardens and they look great. Better get to bed, I've invited a lot of folks to see the garden tomorrow.
well I guess it's good we skated around the downpours... we had a pretty nasty thunder storm that only lasted about 15 mins... nothing near some of the other parts of northern NJ got whacked with... just hope it's not as muggy today as yesterday
Yikes Louise, that's SOME project! Been lurking here, not much to report other than after several weeks of HOT, humid weather and NO RAIN, looks like we're going to have some pleasant temps for working in the garden by the end of the week - high 70's to low 80's but still no rain :(
Not related to weather but wanted to share what happened yesterday, it's a sad story :( We discovered a nest in a group of Hostas on a table several weeks ago - at first I thought it was a mouse nest. Then I realized it was a small wren who would hop out every time I was watering. I looked closer to find five eggs in the nest and I've been careful to avoid her and not disturb her. This past week I've been working in this area and it was difficult not to disturb her. However, she finally got used to me walking back and forth and relaxed and stayed on her nest :) Yesterday morning I checked when she wasn't around to see if the eggs had hatched and was horrified to see that there was only ONE egg left!!! I actually found a broken shell on the floor with the sad remains of one of her babies :((( I was so distraught, tore my heart out and I have no idea what would have taken the eggs? If it was our cat, he would have made a mess of the nest, but it was like the eggs were just plucked out of the nest - maybe a snake? I placed crates around the Hostas in an effort to protect the last remaining egg but DH says that's not going to stop a snake or mouse if that's what got them. I almost hate to visit the nest this morning - afraid the last 'survivor' won't be there :(
Breaks my heart to hear that story.
I always had such confidence in natuer and thought birds had wisdom when they nested.
I hope she has a full term fledgling soon .
Fingers crossed.
Jo Ann
Sorry about the nest invasion. I found some blue egg shells yesterday, but couldn't figure out where the nest was.
We had a lot of thunder at 5:30 and then it started to rain about six o'clock, first very gentle, now coming down at a good clip. My DH kept telling me to hold off on cleaning out the GH yesterday and wait for a nice cool rainy day. I should have listened. But then he always is saying that I never listen.
Boojum, have a great open garden party today.
So today I may try and catch up on my garden journal and tackle the big pile of spring garden catalogs. I am thinking a perfect day to order some spring bulbs. I actual am happy to take a break from the garden today. Plus the soil should be perfect to plant my glads into when it stops. Looks like we will be having rain on and off all week. Weeds will be going wild. 54 degrees with a light breeze. Happy Fathers day to all you Pops. Patti
