I'm growing yellow straightneck squash this year. Three plants are in the garden plot, one is on my deck. Do male and female flowers appear on the same plant? In other words, can I grow a single plant on my deck?
Pollinating squash
yes, but most likely you will need to hand pollinate. You also need a male and female flower open at the same time and the odds are much better if you have several plants.
You will destinct the mail and femail flowers easily-ish.The male sit on a long, thin stem, inside one long , thin stamen, covered with pollen. The female flowers are with shorter stems and a fruit-like part, directly below the bloom itself, inside the flower is the ovary, which is made out of three to six U-shaped parts, has no pollem(until an insect or you transfer it,that is)
