a few composting questions
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Any answers to these things?
Can I use ashes from those small paper covered "Duraflame" logs?
Do compost piles do better raised up off the ground (on pallets or cement blocks I was thinking)?
Will whole Yucca break down (2-3 foot sized ones)
is urine/chicken/goat soakes old straw be considered "green" or a "brown" item?
thanks!
composting questions
I use just about everything except fat, and human waste in my compost pile, so I would say yes to the Duraflame logs as long as the pile is fairly large. It might be slightly better to raise the pile, but I would think it would be very difficult to turn this way. The benefits would not out-weigh the inconvenience. Yucca will eventually break down (all plant materials will), but take quite some time. Good question on the urine. I have never added any to my compost pile. The straw itself is a brown item. Composting is one of the most amazing aspects of gardening to me. In a relatively short time, my kitchen waste, grass clippings and shredded mail is turned into moist, rich-smelling earth. I find this so fascinating!!!
I've been cleaning out my chicken/goat barn and there is a lot of straw but it is of course combined with goat & chicken poo and urine, so I'm confused about what percentages of each I'm adding. I guess I'll just have to start shredding more paper!
likely the presence of urine should mean calculating that material as 'green'. Nitrogen is the determining factor I guess.
I put ashes from my bbq pit in my compost tumbler.
Do you use a paper shredder? I put my shreds in there too.
I think there's a composting forum here.
