Canna problem-what to do?

Rome, GA

Some of my cannas have developed brown rolled up leaves. I know this is an insect problem, but what do I do?

There's a pest called a Canna Leafroller, I'd unroll the leaf and see what you find inside there.

Hi Daisy, all the new leaves on Canna's come rolled up and once they grow larger/taller, they open out, I am not too sure this is an insect problem, maybe not enough water or have you been spraying weed killer close buy, to satisfy yourself re insects, try to gently unroll one of the leaves so you can really look right inside the leaf, you will prob see either the insect, or some droppings from them, I would make sure in your temp they get a good drink of water, even after you water if you poke your finger into the soil, you will probably find an inch down it is still dry, also give them a feed of say Blood/fish and bone meal you but ready mixed to the right amount of each of these organic fertilisers and a handful around each plant then forked into the top soil should help them get built up again, be careful forking though as Canna's have very shallow roots and the tubers should only be just under the top soil too, cant think of anything else to help you but diseased or plants under attack normally recover quick if they are healthy enough, so good luck. Thank you all so much for the advice. I have sprayed them all with liquid sevin, thinking that maybe that would kill any insects. When I unrolled a leaf, there was a lot of brown inside, but I didn't actually see any bugs. Then I just cut off the brown leaves. I hope that I can control it that way.

I had a couple of canna plants ,I noticed once they settled down and flowered....then they used to get infested with some bugs/ worms and they would eat the leaves leaving big gaping holes and over all untidy plant.
I tried cutting of the infected leaves but the bugs were always there so i had to get rid of my canna

hey daisy ...I did not try insecticides (didnt think of it then !) may be it will work for you.. you dont have to get rid of them like me.

You more than likely have skipper caterpillars aka canna leaf rollers.THe brown stuff your seeing when you un-roll the leaf is fras...poop from the cat. I usually just cut the leaves that are rolled up,off and let the cats finish their meal.

I don't seem to have has much trouble on my cannas w/ striped leaves as I do with the solid green colored leaves.

Look closely at the leaves that get rolled up. If you see a fine thread of 'silk' that's keeping the leaf rolled - looks like a single strand of a spider web - then you have leaf-rollers.

They're extremely common in cannas. I've found that sevin or other chemicals that treat leaf-rollers (it says so on the label) work pretty well in controlling them.

I've read that some people cut off the infected leaf, and remove it from the area. I don't know how well that controls future infestations - I do both.

I'm not an expert, but cannas are also easily susceptible to fungus, and it seems that the closer the plants are, the more susceptible they are. Planting them with space between them, to let them get air and sun, goes a long way in preventing fungus.

Hope this helps.

Steve
