im thinking they are crowded?

i absolutely love my hostas. the problem is, so does my dog. the back yard is the only place that is shaded enough to grow them and my dog digs everything up back there. so i put them in this container and stuck them on the porch. it looks okay, but it may be too crowded. is that maybe why the back one is dying?

hmmm. i was just wondering....maybe if i made a small bed under my crape myrtle tree from the forum above this one, if it would give it adequate shade? but i may also have a problem because of the roots of the cm. what do you think?

Jess, My apt faces East, and gets sun most of the day. No trees. Nobody told me I couldn't grow Hostas in sun, so I did! I have a huge bluegreen, wideleaved Hosta right in front, and on the other side a lighter green narrower leaved Hosta. I've transplanted the light green ones and they're doing great! They haven't bloomed yet but they will. I planted mine directly into the ground.

i had them in the ground in the sun last year. they looked pretty bad. i wish i had the wide leaf blue green ones. they are so huge and beautiful. im thinking mine have potential to look good, if i could just get them in the right spot. i have moved them so many times. they are some tough little boogers. one of them my dog dug up and swung around very vigorously. i ran out there and got it from him and replanted it, and it is doing great. amazing.

Jess,
It just needed a little "shaking up"! If I knew how and when, I'd send you some of my Hosta. I'm afraid to dig it right now, I might kill it! After a rain, the water beads up on the leaves like diamonds in frost! Beautiful! Keep in touch, I have a friend here who wants some, too. I could dig both at once (rather, SHE could dig it)!

You may have a drainage problem w/ the hosta in back, or check the crown for rot. Hostas usually aren't bothered by tight spaces, so I don't think that's the problem. Also, if you want to put some hostas in full sun, I've had good luck with Fire and Ice, Loyalist, and plantaginea. Thay are all on the south side in full sun. Avoid any greens with thin leaves, or blues w/ a lot of waxy bloom-- the hot sun will melt the bloom. I also have June and Orange Marmalade in full sun. Hostas are very tough!

thanks. i will have to google those and go get my favorite. im always so jealous of everyone who has big beautiful hostas. now i wont have to be. thanks again.

Jess your pot looks like you have several different kinds of hosta planted together. You might think about splitting them up and using more pots and that would give them more room for their roots to expand. And too some of the hostas in the pot may can take more sun than others.
Just a thought.

that is true about them maybe needing different amounts of sun light. the problem is that i dont know what kind of hostas they are. last summer my neighbor decided she didnt want hostas anymore, so she gave them to me.

That's nice that she gave them to you. To be on the safe side just keep them in at least partial shade. My state as well as yours gets really hot in the summertime.

it has been unbarably hot here already this year, but the thing that is killing everything right now is the wind. it has been crazy the last couple days!!!

Midway, TX(Zone 8b)

Real high winds here too until today. It hasn't been 'as' windy today. Yes the wind has dried things out so quickly. My poor EE are laying on their sides. :(

i know! my EE are all mangled at the bottom of the leaves from rubbing back and forth on the ground. the mulch under them have been completely swept smooth from them being blown around so much. it looks crazy.
