My DH is such a dear. I mentioned something I would like, and bingo, here it is. We have very little shade, so my idea was to put some containers under the pine trees with some "part shade" stuff. Now I get to buy more plants! More pictures here: http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/854149/
I have to show off...
Very nice! That was really sweet of your DH to build that for you, it turned out great!
Thanks. I'm so tickled with it, Liz.
Oh wow Kathleen, that is beautiful and very well built. Your a very lucky lady to have a DH who knows how to build things. If I wanted something like that, I would have to build it myself!!
Please tell John.....well done. :-)
Donna
I will tell him Donna!
Kathleen I completely agree with Donna!! That is awesome that your husband is so talented!! I have to either do it myself (not) or hire some one to do it for me!!
Well, sometimes I have to "nudge" a little, but he's usually willing. What we have discussions about is the "rusticity factor." RF refers to how rough or fine the project is. He likes a very high RF, but I usually want things a little more finished. This project didn't leave much wiggle room, since he was replicating something, but it was a simple piece of woodwork, too. His real forte is mechanics (he's a mechanical engineer) and he loves pulleys!
Here's another thing he built at my request, a plant rack. It goes up and down on pulleys, so I can have hanging plants outside our window. He also built the screened room in the back. He calls it "2 x 4 engineering" because most of it is 2 x 4s nailed, bolted, or otherwise fixed together. Not fancy, but well-built and it suits us fine.
Wow he is very creative!!
He's super. :-)
Any chance you'd consider renting him out? LOL
I was going to suggest that Liz or we can start co-op orders!
Oh, boy - I wouldn't go near him with that suggestion! LOL
Chicken ^_^
lol @ Sue.
She what you started Kathleen? lol
You guys could take a nice road trip up here to the Bay area and he can do some projects for me and Sue while we go to all the nurseries, botanical gardens, etc! LOL
Liz, you have the best ideas!
You could vacation here in Arizona in the fall when it is nice and cool. I am sure we oculd get a large co-op here formed :o)
Let's see - we'd need a hammock for him to take his naps, a supply of British ale (Newcastle or Bass), chips and hummus + regular meals (preferably steak), ready access to Home Depot with lots of $$ in his pocket...oh, and saws, drills, compressor, and assorted other power tools (got to have POWER) and someone we can leave behind to be the "go-fer." Are we set? Can we start at Annie's?
We can start at whatever nursery you want!
I live 5 minutes from Home Depot and Lowes, I have a hammock and I'm sure I could find some nice British ale somewhere around here. I'm not sure about the steak though--I'm a vegetarian so I'm not sure how it would turn out if I tried to cook one...maybe I'll let Sue handle that! And I'm rather light in the power tools department, I have a drill and a Dremel and that's about it (better exercise and less chance of killing yourself with the non power variety!)
I can kick in the steak and BBQ person, DH and he can also provide any other power tools needed. I think we're all set!
OK, now you get to talk to HIM. LOL
Kathleen, You are fortunate to have a talented husband like you have. Those carts show a lot of love put into the workmanship. Good for you!! I hope he has a Happy Father's Day!!!
Thanks for sharing,
Chuck
Thanks, Chuck. He's enjoyed the positive response. Hoping to get it finished soon and get some plants in it!
That is a lovely flower cart. . .your DH is a very talented woodworker. And such a clever idea for the plant shelf that can be raised and lowered when needed.
Is woodworking his hobby?
Give him an appreciative hug and tell him how wonderful he is.
Thank you, Barb. I seem to often find reasons to tell him how wonderful he is - then sometimes for no reason at all. :-)
His dad was a furniture builder, and he's always appreciated woodworking, but doesn't have the patience to do the fine work. Instead, he practices what he calls "2 x 2 engineering." lol He also loves pulleys, so all I have to do is mention a project using them and it's done!
KC:
Just saw your DH's 2" x 2" engineering. It may solve a problem I've been having. Do you think he'd let me look at it up close? Would he mind if I stole his ideas? I have my own power tools and access to an air compressor. I just need to rig up something I can handle and his pulley system looks like it'd work great! Glad I found this thread!
Thanks.

Steal away! He loves to show his projects to anyone interested. He loves pulleys! Would you like his email address so you can't interview him? lol
They make lifting so much easier. He'd probably like my first pulley project.
You know we have a farm, pumpkin patch, and we grow Monterey Pine Christmas trees, right? We'd just put in a small shed to use as a seasonal gift shop. The inspiration for my project was caused by the events of Sept. 11, 2001. My ES and I had watched the coverage that morning. I was so sad. The whole nation was in mourning. I wanted to express my grief and share theirs. So I made a flagpole out of an old tipi pole and clothesline and a swiveling pulley. I installed it that day, just so I could hang the flag at half-mast. I also put up my Harvest Themed Backdrop (LARGE enough to read from the road), to which I added the words GOD BLESS, AMERICA! I thought the visual would remind people of what sacrifices were made for our country. I am proud to be a Marine Corps brat. I support our service people.
I am sending you a picture of my 9-11 Memorial Tipi Flag Pole, still in use out at our little store.
I'd love to correspond with your DH, with your permission. Although it's better if I eyeball it. I really am looking forward to the March Round up. I am only allowed to lift 15 lbs. My second best friend is a dolly, the two wheeled kind, I can lift and move larger potted plants without having to ask for help. I really hate having to ask others to help me do things I used to do easily.
I'd like to rig up a manual Jacuzzi cover lifter. I can't use the thing if I can't get the cover off by myself. Right now I need to clean it out and get it ready for winter use, when I can't use the pool. Solar heating just doesn't keep it warm enough, and heating costs are prohibitive. I do laps around it in the winter, instead of in it. LOL!

SW, you have DMail.
SW, I have got to get over there and see your farm! I just haven't gotten a minute to get there. Maybe one day next week?
I'll be around. Just let me know when.
