Hello,
Can someone please tell me if it is safe to plant four o'clocks near edible food plants like beans etc. I know parts of the four o'clock plants are poisonous. Thank you for any advise.
Question about Four O'clock or Mirabilis jalapa and planting
If you have children who might not be able to tell the difference between the 4 o'clocks and the things that they are allowed to eat then I'd definitely separate them. Otherwise as long as they're far enough apart that you're not going to accidentally get a leaf mixed in with your lettuce when you harvest I think they should be fine.
Hi ecrane3,
Thank you for responding. I'm not worried about getting the leaves mixed up because they would be closest to the beans. Probably within a few feet. I just don't know if the roots or dropping seeds would contaminate anything. How far apart should they be from anything edible? Thanks.
I don't think they'll contaminate the edibles, as long as you know nobody's going to accidentally grab the 4 o'clocks when they meant to grab the veggies I don't think you need to worry. But if you're worried about it, then plant them somewhere else, that way you can feel 100% comfortable.
