Help! I need an idea!

Charleston, WV

This rock garden is my latest addition to my garden. The pole and concrete curb behind is actually on my neighbors property. Does anyone have any ideas of what I can put behind my garden to block this from sight but not invade over to the neighbors property?

How much area do you have there to plant? A few feet or several? It's hard to tell just by the photo. And is it in sun or part shade? My first instinct would be a from of ornamental grass. Many different heights in it-depending on you preference. Or maybe a small bush. One of the many spireas perhaps What do you have planted in the rock garden?

The area is full sun, and there is about 2 square feet there. I think the spirea is a good idea.

As far as what is planted in the garden, there are hens and chicks, stonecrop (low-growing) verbenum, iceplant, and a few others--I made it quite the jumble of color!

If thorns are not a problem perhaps a barberry. You could trim it if necessary. More formal if you went with perhaps boxwood. Or maybe consider a small shrub rose of some sort. The options are endless!!!! It will be very pretty.

You could also put a trellis with some sort of vine on it. Or if you'd like to keep it low profile, you could do like I've done for a couple of my plants--put up one section of split rail fence. I have a Lady Banks rose on one and Mexican Flame vine on the other and both look really nice.

I like your garden and think it has an informal look rather than formal so I'm thinking an ornamental grass would look great in the background. Or I like the vine idea on a trellis. Maybe a small clematis with a nodding head which I think looks less formal. I'm just looking at clematis myself so I can't recommend one... yet.

I have six clematis plants and think they are all easy to care for. I just started planting them about 3 years ago and I'm sticking with pruning group 1 because that way I don't have to remember different pruning methods. I agree that clematis would be pretty there too.

I definitely agree with the option of a shrub rose or two (or ten!). You might also look into some of the taller heathers, as well as potentilla.
