So. California: Not getting enough blueberries to fruit

Sylmar, CA

Hi,

I got a couple blueberry bushes for Father's Day last year and they were loaded with berries for my grandkids to pick. I put them in large pots (20 gallon or so) and the bushes have grown but I have not gotten nearly as many berries. Is there a secret to this? I've been using 1/4-1/3 cup of E.B. Stone's Organic Azalea soil treatment to acidify the soil every three months but I'm wondering if this is enough. Or maybe I've overlooked something?

I think there are certain types of blueberries that are better for warmer climates than others. So if you got these from someplace like Home Depot that doesn't care about selling plants that are appropriate for your climate, then they might be the sort that'll do better up north somewhere. The other possibility is the large pot size...what size pots were they in before you put them into the 20 gal pots? If they were pretty small, they're probably spending a lot of time developing roots in the big pot and that could take some energy away from fruit production (similar to how when you plant things in the garden sometimes they take a couple years to really take off). So the real secret may just be time.

I really appreciate the input. The roots could be the issue as I've noticed that the foliage and branching is really starting to grow now, after the blooms are gone. The plants were bought from a local nursery so I would expect them to be adapted to my area. Thanks, again.
