cleaning foliage on boxwood

New York, NY

I want to clean the construction dust off my boxwood. It's been through a dozen hard rains and its still sticking, which dulls its color. Will a little castille soap or any soap hurt or help? Any other suggestions? Obviously I can't wash every leaf so it's a spray situation.

Power washer? Might be a little rough...how about one of those car wash brushes and a nice strong sprayhose? Is the dust from sheetrock or wood? Neither one is really going to hurt a boxwood too much if you leave it. At least not that I'm aware.

They just look really dull. I could wait for them to completely leaf out, but it's slow because they were transplanted. I used to use milk on interior plants, but I can't use that outdoors. Maybe I'll just really blast them and see how it does.

You can use dish soap. It want hurt any plant. If you have a hose end sprayer just add some dish soap to it and spray away.

Yes-- I use Dawn to clean mine. It will take about 3-4 applications, and do it after a rain, not right before. The dish detergent will also help some bugs out of your garden--beetles, and aphids that I am sure of from experience.

I tried the dish soap. We used to use it on our lawns -- back when I had a lawn -- so I was hoping it would be okay. It worked pretty well the first time. Will do it once more on the weekend. Thanks!
