Ginger

How do you grow ginger? Can you just plant a storebought root, or is it more in depth than that?

I'm a little interested in this too. I think they act a little like potatoes and that you -can- plant a storebought root, but you have to make sure you get a good one. I've read to make sure it's firm and not squishy, but other than that I'm as woefully in the dark as you are.

Ya'll hit the nail on the head, so to speak. Yes, you can grow the root as long as it is fresh (not dried/withered, etc) (as Zoeygirl mentioned).

It needs loose soil, a bit of phosphorus and potassium will do it justice, and a long season. You might want to grow it in a big pot so you can bring it inside during the cooler months.

Plant the root lengthwise in the ground about 3 inches below ground level, water well when planting but after that only water as needed; it prefers well-drained soil. Keep weeded and it'll do fine. If it is a big root you can break it apart and plant several pieces making sure there are eyes/buds on each piece. I'd suggest at least 2 per root piece. I'm not sure how hot ya'lls days are where you are but at least 6 hrs of sun per day is best. If extremely hot you might want to put it where it gets afternoon shade. It will also grow in a slightly shaded area but good sunshine will encourage bigger topgrowth.

I'd get it going now though. It can easily take nine months or more to see a harvest. Hope you can bring the plants inside before frost.
