Radish issues

Venice, FL

what would make radishes taste very bitter and tough? they were planted in a raised bed with lots of compost. full sun.

Montclair, NJ

Lack of water can make radishes bitter and pithy. Especially if it's hot where you are. Try planting some more seeds and water them more frequently.

10-4 I think that might be managable. what about a good way to keep squirels out of the corn?

Get one of those plastic owls and post him out in your corn. Squirrels are deathly afraid of owls. Be sure to move him around ever few days so they don't get smart to the fact that he isn't real.

I was thinking about getting one of those motion activated sprinklers. that would be some good entertainment. My overactive imagination though could just see the squirells massing and building trenches into enemy lines (little green hats and all).

When we had them, our dogs really enjoyed chasing and treeing the squirrels - and it provided us with some entertainment, too.

ive got some bird net over my bed, i hope i dont have to worry about squirell in my corn.

My experience with squirrels is that if they want to get in they will. I have been chasing them out of my attic for years and no matter what I do they find a way back in. I don't think bird netting will keep them out. The only way I have found to effectively deal with them is to eliminate them by trapping and moving them AT LEAST 5 miles from where you trapped them. Squirrels are territorial and it will be a while before new squirrels realize the old squirrels are gone and move in. They are smart and resourceful and very destructive. I have at times had to eliminate them permenantly, if you know what I mean, because they were too smart to be trapped and they were causing too much damage to my house. That's a last resort, though.

i know what you mean... **wink**

And they are soooo good with a mess of greens and a radish salad - LOL.

They are good, but I bet the ones in my yard would taste like bird seed (including the feeders), perenials, and garbage with a nice fiberglass insulation and fascia aftertaste:)

I inherited my daughters rat terrior and she is the best squirrel defense hubby and I have ever seen. She's quick and we've watched her chase one from the bird feeder all the way to the woods line. The squirrel was in high gear overdrive with the afterburners on and it was still all it could do to outrun Millie. Probably took the squirrel a whole week to rest up from that episode. We don't ever see squirrels at the bird feeders anymore (been about a year now). She's better than the plastic owl any day, lol. BTW, she also catches mice, rats and chipmonks. She really earns her doggy chow! Not sure my cats appreciate the competition though.
