peonies not blooming?

Chicago, IL(Zone 5b)

Hi everyone, I'm a newbie & am very excited to have found this site! In the fall of '05 I transplanted 3 clumps of peony from my MIL's yard. The plants have come up every year but have yet to bloom. This year there are 2 small buds on one of the plants and nothing on the other two. Is this normal or could there be something wrong? TIA!

Peonies will not bloom if not transplanted correctly, # 1 they need to be transplanted at the EXACT depth that they were at originally. # 2 They have to be placed in the same orientation as they were, for example you need to mark the north side of the plant before digging it up, when you transplant it the north side needs to face north. I've had the same problem, if the above guidelines are followed the plant will bloom.

Hope this helps.

Sometimes it takes a couple of years to bloom as well, but realistically, get out the ruler. Fussy fussy mamas. Also, they do like their light. Good luck.

Very informative, thanks! I had no idea. So I guess we got lucky with the one plant. My MIL's got loads of them; maybe I'll try again with a new batch.

No need to replace. I have hauled mine up or put on soil depending. Key thing is to measure. My aim is 1.5 inches but do a bit of google to make sure that's the same in your area. Or if you live in the same zone, just measure your MILs. Good luck.
