I used Ortho weedkill on my patio pavers to keep the weeds from growing in between them. I had my gigantic 15 year old split leaf philodendron two feet from the patio in a pot. I live in Minnesota so I bring the plant in for the winter and out for the summer. It was spectacular looking. People always comented on it. Unfortunately, the weed killer appears to have leached into the plant. All the leaves went yellow, then brown. It doesn't look dead yet though. So, I removed all the leaves, watered it very well and let it drain out, added some new potting soil and fertilized it.
Do you think I can save this plant or am I just fooling myself? HELP!
split leaf philodendron
I think it really depends on how much herbicide it got exposed to, so only time will tell. Generally it's best not to fertilize plants that are under stress, but otherwise it sounds like you did everything you could, so now you'll just need to sit back and wait and see if it is able to recover or not. Make sure you water carefully, now that it's lost most of its leaves and probably suffered some root damage, it's not going to go through water nearly as fast as it was before so you'll need to be careful not to overwater. Also if it's in an area that gets some sun, I'd move it into a shadier area to minimize the amount of stress it has to deal with.
I agree with all of the above. In addition, I would remove all the soil it's currently growing and replace with new. At the time you change the soil, you can inspect the roots and trim away any that are collapsed, or dead. This is a tough plant and should rebound in no time. You could also contact the company (the number should be on the label) and ask if they have any suggestions.
