Breathe deep & tell us what smells wonderful in your garden

Bucyrus, OH(Zone 6a)

I have almost 100% success w/ gardenias by dropping the cuttings in a little 10 gallon aquarium. The fish get greenery and the gardenia cuttings grow roots galore. When I get a few strong roots I pop 'em in little pots and keep 'em moist.

Rob, dunno if it applies to you or not, but you might want to keep your potted gardenias out of hot drying winds and away from reflective surfaces. Mine are all potted, but they do well here in temps down to the 40's. What you have that I do not is brilliant sun and hot dry winds.

I am currently growing Kleim's hardy and Veitchii. I have six starts of Veitchii.

joegee, i'm going to try that. sounds easier than the cut, stick ,and keep moist method . love it!!!!! sally

Agree with Joe - I've noticed some Gardenias withstand the full sun much better then others. The Shooting Star, God bless her heart, is in direct sun all day - she seems to flourish in it. The Chuck Hayes and Kleims Hardy don't seem to appreciate it as much. Someone had a good suggestion last year - put something taller in front of it so that at least the roots are shaded but they still get the sun they need to grow and bloom. I've stuck my 3 gal EE pots in front of them....might add a few of the Plumie pots as well - since I know THEY love the sun. The one that someone sent me that "might" be Gardenia 'Mystery' - I have a pot partially shading it - as I'm not sure whether it'll be a sun lover or balk. It seems to be a guessing game esp. when they're babies - kinda need to be coddled a bit more.

So excited to be getting a few of those on trades....what's its scent like?

Deep East Texas, TX(Zone 8a)

Ahhhh Chantell, my taste is all in my mouth. LOL

I am afraid I'm not eloquent enough to describe the fragrance. Not mouth watering exactly but... let me go sniff again....

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

If you're savvy enough to use the term eloquent - YOU most certainly can describe a scent....LOL HUGS

South West, LA(Zone 9a)

I have always thought they smell like Ivory soap with hints of this and that mixed in. I always love to hear what others think they smell like.
Pod, will you be going to the East Texas RU at the end of the month? I can bring you some Brug cuttings for you.

I have a lily that came up....it was sitting in my ylang ylang pot so I almost missed it except the smell was wafting out whenever I walked passed it, so I had to stop and find the source of the smell. Very pretty too.

Hmmm... you know, it strikes me as a clean scent but not sure I would have said Ivory. Interesting, let me go breath more deeply ~ LOL

Caren ~ no to the RU. That would scare me to no end! I would pull my hair out when I got home with all those plants in the heat of summer, nowhere to put them, needing to water them, wondering how I was going to overwinter them... LOL I appreciate the offer of cuttings but have trouble overwintering the pink, yellow and white NOIDs I already have. Thanks much for your generousity!

I don't have any recent pictures, but my Confederate Jasmine and my Double Delight rose smell wonderful right now.

Deep East Texas, TX(Zone 8a)

Cool, you are still enjoying the Confederate jasmine! Mine has wound down.

Bucyrus, OH(Zone 6a)

Bloooming today, Stephan's jasmine. Mild, yet pleasant fragrance of perfume jasmine. :)

Chantall, what is the botanical name of your South African Jasmine?

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

Joanmary - tag from Kartuz reads Jasminium angulare

The one tagged as Jasminium floridum bloomed today - pretty sun shine yellow - scent very different from the "usual" jasmine...at least to my nose

Nice shots, joe!

eww eww eww....I just came inside from watering and pottering around my garden taking in all the nice scents and trying to take pictures and I just found a 2ft snake skin that has been shedded.....I hate snakes! I'm from Australia and so many of the common snakes are very poisonous so I am a little...no VERY weary of snakes. I know it's part of nature but can't they be part of someone elses nature....like down the street more? I think it's time to get a cat....my dog is no help she was playing with the snake skin...eww...I think I'll stay inside today and chat to you guys.

Your lucky to have those jasmine's Chantell....I'm getting annoyed with mine...they just don't want to bloom...ie....Winter Jasmine, Poets Jasmine...although my Grand Duke is still going strong, this is my new favorite plant.
You said your yellow jasmine bloomed Jasminium floridum and that it was a very different from the "usual" jasmine....what does it smell like? is it nice at least? worth getting?

Joegee, thanks for the pics and description on the Stephan's jasmine, it's now on my ever-growing wish list.

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

Samantha - yes, the scent is nice...just different...wish I could be a tad more descriptive - ugh!! I do like its scent...not as much as my Maid of Orleans. I sent you a dmail

Here's the infamous 'Fragrant Cloud' - not "all that" to look at but the night fragrance is something

Thumbnail by Chantell
Dallas, OR(Zone 8a)

There is a rose called fragrant cloud. Had a beautiful one in CA that bloomed through Christmas. I have one here now in Oregon, but it has not done very well so far. I am hoping to have a few blooms, but nothing like my CA one. It was a strong smelling rose...but delicious!
This is a borrowed photo from my rose file.
