bugs in corn

Venice, FL

ok, so my corn crop is dead now. we had to throw every single plant away. We noticed some black spots on the husk, opened one up and it was just crawling with what looked like maggots. in all the farmer knowledge and tricks that are out there can anyone tell me if there is a way to prevent this from happening? I must have had 30 plants. I was looking forward to corn on the cob too:(

Your description fits the sap beetle. Best control I have found is to select cultivars with long husks. Cultivars, where the ear sometimes protrudes from the shuck ( Iochief for example) they are almsot impossible to control. If you keep the ears free of earworms, you seldom have problems as they like damaged or protruding ears to attack. If you are not organic, Carbaryl ( one brand name is Sevin) works reasonably well.
