Why do my holly bushes have yellow leaves with brown spots?

Hamden, CT

Hi, my name is Nancy and I live in Hamden, CT. I know very little about gardening but love to buy plants, plant them and see what happens! (I don't have a whole lot of time to devote to gardening, unfortunately.)
I have three holly bushes planted side by side and all seem to have a number of yellow leaves with brown spots one them. Can anyone tell me if this is normal? All the bushes have lots of new growth (bright green leaves), so I'm not sure what to make of the yellow ones. Sorry, I really am a novice at this!

Can you post a picture of your plants? It could be normal, even evergreen plants will drop leaves periodically, they just don't lose them all at once like a deciduous plant would. But it could also be something fungal, most likely caused either by excessive watering or water splashing up onto the leaves while watering (and evening watering can also contribute to problems since the leaves stay wet for longer and that creates a breeding ground for fungus)

I have a large holly in my front yard. It is over 15 years old. It sheds a lot of old leaves in the spring when it is growing new ones. It will shed a little all year but mostly in the spring. Yes the leaves will turn yellow and have black/brown spots but that is normal. No worries.

Sorry ecrane3, I am slow in the ways of the digital age - no digital camera and would not have the first clue how to post pics - but thanks for responding. It's been a relatively dry spring here in ct so hopefully it's not a fungus problem. Thanks smokey for responding also - the new growth looks quite healthy so maybe i'm worrying for nothing! Was just curious what was happening.
