scarifying

Bolivia, NC

Would someone please describe an easy way to scarify? Do I have to actually knick each individual seed? I thought I could maybe wad up some coarse sand paper and put it in a bag with the seed and shake. Is the wet paper towel thing the same as scarifying?

I have never tried the sand paper in a bag method, so I can't compare, but sandpaper used on each seed will work with some seeds. I have good luck using a small nail clipper on tougher seeds like Morning Glory. Just be sure to keep the nick very small. You only need to create a break in the hard outer coating, moisture will do the rest of the work. As for the wet paper towel, I think you still to scarify the seed first. Moisture has a tough time penetrating a tough seed coat.

Instead of scarifying, sometimes you can get away with just soaking the seeds in water if you place them in a dish with enough water to cover them. I have had tons of luck with this method even on hard seeds like morningglories. Just remember to remove the seeds from the water after 48 hours (or after they crack open) and plant them right away.
