Gardenia Plants and their care.

Greenacres, WA

I knew a lady that had a one in her front room, it was huge it was hanging in the corner of her living room. I have tried 3 times to have one in my home and each time they died. The other day I bought a new one & I don't want to lose it. I would like input on the best way to care for it. Right now I have it on my front porch, it is rainy so thought it would be good for the plant. I live in Spokane WA and I can't leave it outside in the winter because it is way to cold. Thank You

Can you give us a little more info on what happened to the ones that have died? Like what sort of conditions you had them in the house, how often you watered, fertilized, etc? And what were the symptoms that you saw as it started to go downhill? They can definitely grow indoors, they may not flower as well inside as they would outside but they shouldn't die, so I suspect something was off about the conditions you had for the previous ones--too much/little water is always my first suspect but there are other things that can go wrong too.

I've never tried growing Gardenia's inside ... I have two huge bushes in my yard that are in full bloom right now and the whole neighborhood smells fantastic! Here's some information I found on growing Gardenias as a houseplant that you might like to read: http://www.hort.purdue.edu/ext/gardeniachallenge.html

Good luck with your plant. I hope it grows well and thrives for you.

Thank You so much for your reply.
I used Miracle Grow for them 1x a month. I watered them how ever I let them dry out some, because I was afraid that I would drown them. This plant says to keep it moist and not let it get dry. My other plants the leaves would get yellow in spots and sooner or later it would die. Last years I put it outside so it would get watered when I watered my flower beds but it still died.

Thank you for the link it is very helpful.
I wish that I could keep it outside year around but Spokane WA has -0 in the winter so way too cold. By keeping it outside in the Spring, summer, Autumn I hope to have it around longer then when it starts getting cooler in the fall I will bring it in.
