Hummingbirds

Matewan, WV(Zone 6b)

This lady lives in a Hummingbird fly zone. As they migrated, about 20 of them were in her yard. She took the little red dish, filled it with sugar water and this is the result.

The Woman is Abagail Alfano of Pine, Louisiana - she has been studying them daily and one morning put the cup from the feeder, with water in it, in her hand; as they had gotten used to her standing by the feeder they came over to her hand. She says in touching they are as light as a feather.'

The Hummingbirds are attracted to the color red (notice the red lid she has in her hand).

The recipe for hummingbird nectar is: 1 cup sugar 4 cups water boil for 1 minute. Let cool before adding it to your feeder. If you have more than what you need for the feeder you can refrigerate it up to one month.

Hummingbirds are also attracted to Rose of Sharon Bushes.

Oh wow, this is the neatest thing ever! I love how they just come right to her now!!!!! I notice the background doesn't look so gardener friendly? I wonder does she grow flowers to encourage the birds?

Thanks so much for the hummer recipe, we're always buying it at the box store and this will come in handy!!!

Why do those hummers look so fake? Esp the one flying right above it's looks like it was pasted there.

The lack of scenery confuses me to...but still, if an actual photo it is inspiring!

Many, many years ago I had a hummingbird feeder on the balcony of my apt in Calif. They got so used to me that when I changed their nectar, they'd sit on the balcony railing not even 2 ft from me, waiting & b**ching at me the whole time. lol

I had a hummer feed from my hand. It's very exciting. I didn't dare move.

This actually is possible, It's NOT fake. Go to Youtube and search for humming birds.

I haven't ever tried to get my hummers to feed from my hand but they come by the dozens to my feeders while I'm sitting in my chair on my front porch. My chair is only about 4 feet from their feeders. They are very nervy and fearless. I just love watching them. And like SCNewbie, mine will hang around and fuss at me while I refill their feeders. They will all scrap with each other over the first one I refill while I'm getting the others.

I had two other photos of this same scene but you can't upload more than one at a time to a post. Here is another one....and I'll put the 3rd one in another post....

That is so neat!!!!!! My mom used to get them in her screened in patio and she'd catch them to release them back outside, but nothing like that!!

Lots of Hummingbird videos. Here's a link to a person petting one while it was feeding.

Never said it wasn't possible just that in that certain picture the hummers looked fake.
