how do i grow sugar cane? do i need some seeds or cuttings?
sugar cane
Cuttings have worked best for me. I just plopped them in the ground the right side up and they did wondrous. Good Luck!
like if i buy a cane from some one who cuts them to sell to eat will it grow? im trying to figure out how to not be a consumer. would sugar beets be a better source sugar?
you could purchase a chunk of sugar cane, but you'd want to make sure that it hasn't been processed in any way. You might want to talk to the sugar cane seller and ask them about growing your own. We used a sugar cane press, hand crank style and it was good for sugar cane drinks, but as far as producing your own crystallized sugar, I don't know. It would be interesting to look into sugar beets, but I don't know how you'd process them and how much you would have to grow. Please post info on your findings, it sounds awesome! I wish I was in a tropical climate sometimes!
jtwig....you may not be in a tropical climate but you sure are in an outstanding one for growing sugar beets. About 20 miles south of Davis is the town of Clarksburg where they used to grow a lot of sugar beets and they had a sugar mill there too! I've been gone from that area a while now so I don't know if it's still that way, probably all grapes now.
Oh neat! Thanks for the information! I have a sugar cane patch and it doesn't do all that great in the winter and needs too much water. Thankfully it gets watered by the common area lawn! :o) I will look more into sugar beets. We grow beets, but I haven't thought of making sugar out of them... Thank you Dann
jtwig, you mentioned in a previous post: "We used a sugar cane press, hand crank style and it was good for sugar cane drinks"
Where did you get your press from? I grow sugar cane in my backyard in Katy TX and have been trying to find an economical way to extract the juice just for use in the home. My plan is to freeze the canes straight after I harvest them for use throughout the year.
We got the press in Brazil. Maybe they exist online? Sorry for the delayed response--only a couple months!
