Lilac bloom dying

(Zone 7a)

The blooms formed about four weeks ago and one tiny flower opened. Now they are turning limp and brown.

Any ideas why? Or is this normal and I just need to wait? They are in full sun, average garden soil with clay under about 2' down. They are three years in the ground and it's their first year blooming. All the neighbors flowered normally.

Those buds look fine to me; I don't see any brown and/or they don't look dried up at all. Yours may be a later blooming variety than your neighbors or yours may have different lighting that's delayed the blooms. The wilting could be due to insufficient water (if you've had a dry spell) or sometimes they wilt if they are in a hot, sunny spot even if they have plenty of water. Anyway, I'd just wait and see. They'll probably turn out OK.

We've had a moist spring. I'll wait and see then. Thanks, Plantfreak. Maybe I just needed reassurance. ☺

No problem, buddy. I'm sure you'll return the favor sometime :)

Every chance I get! LOL

All the flowers died. Turned brown, wilted and shriveled away.

Any ideas why? I can't see anything on them, such as bugs, fungus etc...

Did the buds open normally? Did your area have excessively cold or hot temperatures during their bloomtime? Do you have any pictures of what happened? Can I stop the spanish inquisition now? :)

Nobody expects them! LOL I'll go get pics. BRB

Here is what they look like today. I didn't notice the webbing on them until I got close-ups.

This one hasn't changed since it formed. One tiny blossom opened on one plume and that's it.

Overall plant.

We had a moist spring, some frost and such but nothing too extreme. Nothing that wouldn't have affected the neighbors plants, too.

Hmm, although it does resemble freeze damage somewhat, that should affect the leaves as well. Now it's looking a bit like bacterial blight. You can read about it here:

Oh my. It looks just like that. I'm running out to prune right now! LOL Thanks.

What to do Kwanjin is prune off all the flowers and burn them, you can get a spray from the garden store too and use as directed, also I would add a good feed to the roots so the whole plant can build up more strength to cope with diseases and bugs, it is a shame that this happened but with good watering and feeding this year, your plant should recover again, just be watchful for damage to the foliage on Lilacs as they can be attacked this way, oh also burn any stuff that has fallen to the ground too as this can lay dormant over the winter time. Good luck. WeeNel.
