I just got a huge shipment of bulbs and don't know what to d

Atlanta, GA

I've never dealt with any bulb except the standard daffodil. An online nursery had an end of season grabbag marked from almost 200 that I ended up getting for 25 with some fancy online coupon magic. I don't know what do with them.

Apparently these bulbs should be planted more like April for summer blooms. So can I put them in the ground? I live in Georgia and we have a looong summer, so it'll be hot enough to qualify for summer way into September.

It looks like I got some glads, satisfaction lily trees, grand paridoiso lilys, peacock orchids, and shamrock iron cross bulbs, then some dahlia, orange glory flower, lady's mantle, and 4'oclocks root clumbs (rhizomes?).

All of these are supposed to be perinneal in nature. I also have a big bag of daffodil's but I guess I can put those in the fridge and plant them in the fall/winter.

So what should I do with all this bulby mess?

sorry i can't help but you must be having fun thinking about your bargain and all the flowers you will be growing!!

Why yes, its tons of fun. I wish I knew what I was doing! Gardening is a very new adventure for me. I am learning more and more everyday, its a challenge with all the mature trees I have coupled with the city of Atlanta's watering restrictions, but I am making it work. :)

New York, NY

I would. I planted spring blooms that I forgot about in Feb this year and they came up fine. Sooner than later, of course.

Go ahead and put them in the ground, but soak them in water overnight first, and you still may get soem blooms this year.

It was Breck's. Here is the link to how to get the deal if they still have it. It took pretty much forever to get here though.

The dahlias and all the other tuberous plants will be in need of a good soak to plump up the tubers, as for the bulbs, get them in the soil as fast as you can, the bulb is like a store cupboard so the flowers will already be held within the bulb, they need moisture and soil/compost now to get the roots into and form, this allows moisture to be taken up to the bulbs, for a guide, bulbs need to be planted 3 times the deapth of the bulbs, so say your bulb measures 2 inches from root end to growing tip, then they need planted 6 inches deep, add lots of nice moist compost to the planting holes so the bulbs stay cool and get the moisture they need, as for the tubers, plant them about an inch under the soil surface as these like to be baked by the sun for them to make shoots and these will form the flowers, Dahlias like a rich manured/composted soil as they are really greedy plants, make sure you keep watering them all. as for the Daf's I dont think I would keep them in the fridge for as long as the autumn, but either get them planted now, deep and leave them there in the flowering position you want them to stay, or store in say the basement if it is nice and cool, My Daf's are still in foliage, had the flowers pulled off so they dont form seeds, so I am not sure when your Daf's were lifted from the ground for sale this year, check over each bulb and make sure they are all firm as any soft rotten ones will pass on the rot to the rest of the bulbs, to store them out the ground, I would hang them in net bags or old stocking/hose to keep an air flow around them till you get them in the soil. Good Luck. WeeNel.
