Soil Mixture

Does anyone know what a good soil mixture is for starting any kind of flowers - mums - landscape cabbages and so on by seed?

thank you

Are you direct seeding them in the garden, or are you starting them in pots/flats to transplant later?

I am starting them in flats/ pots to transplant at a later time.
This year when I started my flowers they just seemed really heavy compared to if you bought them at a store.
I am getting ready to plant my mums and landscape cabbages into flats and I don't want them to weigh a ton but I want to make sure I have the right soil mixture so they grow good enough that they are fairly big before I transplant them.

If you're starting them in flats then the easiest thing to do is buy a seed starting potting mix. Miracle Gro makes one that should be fairly readily available, but there are other brands too. But if you can't find the seed starting mix, the most important thing is to use a soil-less potting mix, not garden soil (anything you buy at the nursery that's labeled for use in containers should be the right kind)

I agree with Ecrane about buying some seed compost as it has been sterilised, has enough nutrients added for your seeds and it will allow more air into the roots of your seedlings than heavy garden soil, also when you transplant your seedlings, you might want to add a handfull of this compost/seed mix into the planting hole so the new transplants get a good start and the roots get a chance to go down, best of luck with your sewing and growing.
