East Texas Roundup - June 28th in Tyler/Jacksonville area

Kim,

It's 2.5 hours from Bryan, which is indeed a pretty good drive. Sure would be nice if you could come, though!

We moved here long ago but didn't mention it to very many people. I only updated my member page location about a week or so ago, so you're learning about it pretty much at the same time as everyone else. ^_^

Garland, TX(Zone 8a)

Dave, I didn't know you moved either! And to think you came to our Arlington RU in October... and never said a word... tsk. :)

I would love to attend this RU. I don't know yet if I can make the one in Buffalo, so I'm going to count on this one, at least. Especially if Lorraine and catlady are coming... have to meet them in person!

Fate, TX(Zone 8a)

johnnyswife.....i'm not new and i go out of my way to be tacky. lol. trade material is in the eye of the beholder. people offer up compost, manure, books, homemade items, most anything you can think of. and no, you don't have to have anything to trade. there are always generous people willing to help a new person get started.

Chickens, you forgot chickens. I need a rooster:0) lol

Gilmer, TX

I was just writing Lorraine about what to bring and I thought of alot more stuff. We may be bring another member with us. Of course I warned her she might have to hold plants all the way down and back. Now I need to get over to the trade page and start my list before I forget all the things I just thought up. I'm really getting excited about this, a few years ago we had one at my house and it was so much fun. I didn't have to dig stuff until I knew what people wanted. I'm off to the list now. Bye

(Phyllis) Flint,, TX(Zone 7b)

johnnyswife...I will chime in here with mamajack..she is right and I can vouch for it as I just moved to Texas last July and went to my first RU in October I don't' have much to offer in trades plant wise with just getting started with everything here ...I did use seedlings from the trees already here and still do since I am still in my first year of gardening in Texas.
I went to that RU with not much of anything and came home with stuff and still do
and yes I still feel a lil odd at getting stuff and not having much to offer in trade but I know someday I will be able to return the generosity

As for mama and her ways she is a riot but then everyone is wonderful and has made me feel so at home I just wish we all lived closer together to be able to get together more often.

Phyllis

Como, TX(Zone 7b)

Thanks for all your help. I'm going to try to get down there.

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

Hello Dave, I wish I could come to this RU, but with three RUs under my belt by the time this one happens, it is just too much.
If you have it again next year I will be sure to reserve one of my trips for it.
Hopefully we will see you in October here at the Arlington RU.
Josephine.

It certainly sounds like there are a lot of people interested in this roundup; I'd like to see it become an annual thing (or perhaps a major annual roundup in the springtime with a minor one in the fall).

Lindsay, OK(Zone 7a)

I know will be great to have Dave closer to come to Arlington in the Falls if he has time! Wish we would of known in time for the Spring Waxahachie RU and would of asked Dave to head out for that one also seeing he is so close now. So maybe we will see him this fall when we gather together - it was great fun last year.

If the house does not sell before then I am going to try to make this RU.

Jacksonville, TX

Cocoa, just so that you know, I have little ones too, and I would bring them along w/ no worries....I grew up in J'ville and my grandmother used to take us to Love's Lookout a lot back then when it wasn't quite so 'gussied up', and we never got injured, lol. Anyway, I may bring my kiddos if Dad can't babysit ;0)

Thank you, Msdoolittle. That eases my concerns. They are really good kids. It's just best for me to be prepared in case it's one of those days they are intent on proving me wrong;0)

Fate, TX(Zone 8a)

well my son jack is another story. he takes after his mama and can't help it but if we come he may cause generalized terror and extreme agitation among you other mothers not so used to his antics. we need to give him a job. dave can he change your oil? lol.

Jacksonville, TX(Zone 8a)

Count me in . . .

This will be my first RU too, PLUS, perfect chance to find homes for so many plants that I have. Nothing wrong with them. I'm just ready for new and different plants this year and as a result Jerry and I have been doing major work turning our entire front yard into a flower bed complete with paths. NO MORE GRASS MOWING FOR US!

Now, to start working on a list of what I have to bring.

THIS WILL BE GREAT FUN!

Emma

Garland, TX(Zone 8a)

You are so right, Emma. It will be! And you'll make such great friends! :)

mamajack, feel free to put Jack to work on my property. We have lots of weeding to do, rocks to lift, and branches to clear out of the woods! :-)

Buffalo, TX(Zone 8b)

Dave, do you have any pretty rocks that don't require heavy equipment to move? There are some here in the creekbeds, but no way to get them out of there. I would love to move them to the yard, but no way to do it.

Do you have coastal hay in your pastures? It is the best around here for grazing. The only problem I am having is the property we bought was all planted in coastal and it is not kind to gardening efforts at all.

Charlene

We have lots of iron ore stones and our children have been taught to hoard them for projects, which means they go behind my tractor and dig them out of the garden when I'm cultivating. :-) I love win-win situations. :)

The pasture is that typical native clumping grass. No coastal on our entire property and it is going to stay that way!!! I'd love to have an improved coastal (like Tifton 85) but I'm currently really enjoying not having coastal/bermuda in my veggie garden... Would hate to import it in like that.

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I am determined to get to a round up but this one would take 6 hours and 40 minutes the map says. Ya'll have lots of fun!

Jacksonville, TX(Zone 8a)

The area around Love's Lookout has lots of the native iron ore and redish sand stone. I have used them to border all of my flower beds. Many are large but also movable size ones. I love the look it has given my beds. My place is only a few minutes from the Lookout so you will be welcome to come see and get some rocks but they get heavy for transport fast.
Look forward to meeting all at the RU.

(Maggi) Big Sandy, TX(Zone 8a)

Well now, this is very neat!

I guess I forgot to mention to Ken that we are coming, he's really excited :~)

We'll be bringing our friend Kathryn since it isn't Canton weekend so she will be free.

I'll put up my list around the middle of June and will plan to bring some unlisted goodies as well.

Finally, a RU we CAN attend.

(Maggi) Big Sandy, TX(Zone 8a)

Eyes! Holly Lake? Do you live at Holly Lake now? That's 12 minutes from us!

Toadsuck, TX(Zone 7a)

Nope, Maggie, kids just have a timeshare there.

"eyes"

Gilmer, TX

maggiedew, We must work on getting eyes there. I just wonder how many times she has been to that timeshare and we didn't know. I'm only about thirty minutes from there. We could have gone up and visited her. Hummmmmmmm, maybe that's what she was afraid of. LOL

(Maggi) Big Sandy, TX(Zone 8a)

LOL!

(Phyllis) Flint,, TX(Zone 7b)

ok I have to ask where is Toadsuck TX?
I laughed when I saw it but I know Texas has some wonderful names for towns

Toadsuck, TX(Zone 7a)

Toadsuck is the original name for Collinsville....y'all come on and tempt me........never can tell.

I need to mention that the signs on Hwy 69 do not say Love's Lookout but "Rest Area" so look for that.
This is going to be fun. It will be great to really meet some of the folks that I have traded with and have read their post. Sounds like a few characters coming too. I do feel like Toadsuck needs to have a rep here, only right. I have been out looking at all the things I have potted up to bring and need to start posting them. Looks like a truck full already.

Eyes... mmm let's see if the fact of trading plants with others isn't enough I can tell ya I personally have meet Dave and 2 of his children, DdeTex has a wonderful place as I have been to his home. Mamajack is a riot to have around, If Mitch comes he is a super nice and is moving to Okie soon, pbtxlady is a sweetie and cocoa_lulu is alot of fun and knows how to make more work for my DH by bringing me back home with a bunch of plants after we have meandered the country side... and I am sure from my experience so far everyone coming is going to make this alot of fun

then if that doesn't help think of poor lil ol' me coming to this one wanting to get to meet and know some wonderful people that can help me learn the do's and don'ts in Texas Gardening and the good places to go for gardening or sights to see for a Yankee still in my first year of living here and the only person I have been running around per say with is Cocoa (not a bad thing at all) and it would be nice to put faces to names and find others to do things with when gas allows. LOL

Toadsuck, TX(Zone 7a)

What's all this talk I hear 'bout maters and humongo bedding plants facilities and the like........hmmmmmmmn, Think a little side trip maybe in order.....not to mention the roses down that way.......catlady?

"eyes"

Winnsboro, TX

Ok, count me in. I'm going to be with Cat-Lady and Loraine. Well, if there's room for me in the car with all the plants. LOL
Shoot I don't know what I'll bring besides my sack lunch. I'll see if I have any daylily babies, seeds, gardening books and so forth.
This will be my first round up and so I don't know what to expect except to have a wonderful day and be surrounded by other plant nuts like myself.

Wondering out loud if we should bring the trailer behind us to haul everything in. Just a suggestion Catlady.... more room for plants and my little yellow wagon.

I know exactly where Love's Look Out is since I use to live in Rusk. No Catlady, I wasn't a patient there. LOL

I have been back there one time a few years ago, but it seems to me that one could still get over the edge of that rock wall. Because I'm one of those very people who would see something blooming off the side and want to go inspect it and maybe get a start of it. Shoot, I've even hunted down that road off the side of the mountain years ago. On a clear day you can see about 30 miles. It's a very beautiful scenic view.

Can't wait to meet all you other gardeners and get some starts of your wonderful plants to grow at my place.

Happy Gardening, Marian

Gilmer, TX

Yes, eyes, there are roses everywhere. Most are on the north side of Tyler but if you are coming from Holly Lake, you will probably be coming down Hwy 69 where most are located. If you take I-20 E there is usually a roadside stand, a couple of 100 ft. up the road, that sells tree roses pretty cheap. So, we can count on you then?

A trailer might be a good idea, Marian, except I haven't pulled on in years. Think I might see if I can fit those plastic shelves in the back someway so they don't shift. Anyway, I like the thought of you and Lorraine covered in plants.

(Phyllis) Flint,, TX(Zone 7b)

Ya do know that come Sept the wholesalers like Mea's have rose bushes on sale for $3. Cocoa_lulu was the first person I meet from here and she showed me the way to them and I now have 17 rose bushes some from Mea's last Sept and some from Chamblee's

Winnsboro, TX

Hey there are usually vendors sat up on some of the roads with rose bushes for $3 or $4 each. It just depends on which ones you are looking for. Of course they also have some that are a little higher, and yet still a lot cheaper than a garden center would be.(grin) Watch for their signs with the prices on them.

Another piece of advice is to not buy them at the first place you see. Just make mental notes of where they were located and how much they wanted for their roses. Chances are someone down the road will also have them at even a better price. LOL

Happy Gardening, and Ya'll be sure and bring lots of goodies to swap and trade!

Marian

Yelp, I'm guilty of buying a truckload at a time. LOL

Tyler, TX(Zone 7b)

First "howdy" to Mibus2, a fellow resident of Flint, Texas who I'm obviously going to need to meet. My wife, eleven year old daughter and I moved to this area about two years ago. We've been slowly working on replacing very boring landscaping and using DG as a resource. We haven't been actively posting on the threads since most of our questions are already answered in the resource pages.

We know Love's Lookout and certainly intend to come and make new friends. With only new plants in our beds we don't have any to swap. I like the suggestion to bring something other than plants and we'll think up something. What a delightful surprise to find a round-up happening so near.

Carl

(Phyllis) Flint,, TX(Zone 7b)

Howdy Cherrybark!!!!
Ya know I have lived here almost a year now and have yet to be in the town of Flint. Moved from Illinois.
We are over on 2661 closer to Chandler and Tyler then Flint.
looks like we are working on doing the same things changing a boring lot into something nice to enjoy.

you can bring other things for sure ....umm ideas? seeds, books, manure, gardening tools, pots, ....things gardeners would use or other things too if someone could use it ....ask in a post of what you come up with and see...my first RU I didn't have much at all other then little trees ...pines, cedars, sassafras and bamboo roots.
I still don't have alot but offer what I have and know someday I will be able to return the gift.

Phyllis

Toadsuck, TX(Zone 7a)

We got a head count yet? Do they have BBQ grills there? Hot dogs would be good and easy. Think that's what I'll do for my bunch.

"eyes"

Tyler, TX(Zone 8a)

Dave , my husband and I will be there and we are sure looking forward to meeting you and all the rest.
