East Texas Roundup - June 28th in Tyler/Jacksonville area

Come on, come all to the first roundup in East Texas (that I know of, anyway), being held on June 28th, 2008 beginning at 9am and ending at ??pm.

Map:
http://tinyurl.com/3jvbk4

It's being held at the beautiful Love's Lookout area, north of Jacksonville. If you haven't ever been there, it's a sight to behold.

Here are the distances to Love's Lookout:

From Tyler: 18 miles
From Palestine: 31 miles
Nacogdoches: 50 miles
Lufkin: 58 miles

Directions from Tyler: Come down Highway 69 through Mt. Selman and Love's Lookout will be on the left.

Directions from Jacksonville: Head north on Highway 69 toward Tyler. Love's Lookout is just outside town on the right.

There are 42 DG subscribers within 50 miles of Jacksonville, so I think this could be a nice sized get-together! Bring plants for trading and your own lunch! Please do post in this thread if you're intending to come, and you might also mention what kinds of plants you may have available for trade.

Dave

(Phyllis) Flint,, TX(Zone 7b)

Whoo hoo!!!!!!!!
I know where that is and it isn't' that far away either.

mmm gonna have to do some looking to see what I might have for a trade though....could always dig up more bamboo roots still plenty here to get rid of ...hahaha

And of course we will be doing at least lunch too right?

Jacksonville, TX(Zone 8a)

Mibus2- since this is a first for many of us you experienced ones will have to give us pointers. I will have lots of things to trade and close enough to have folks go to my house and get others if they wish.
Hope this will be a good gathering.
D-mail me on getting together and swapping the plants we have for each other. Still have the flowering almond for cocoa. Most of my running around is over for a while and school nearly out for you.
Ya'll come down now.

I was thinking that everyone could "brown bag" a lunch, or if enough people commit to coming, we could certainly do a potluck type lunch.

David - does Love's Lookout have an area with picnic tables and shade?

Jacksonville, TX(Zone 8a)

I will get there early that morning and stake out the large covered pavillion. There are others but smaller. All have picnic tables. It also has an indoor area for information on interest in the area. Nice clean rest rooms. They have drinks and some snacks for sale there. Really nice beautiful area.
I am fine with whatever we do for lunch. By then we will need water or drinks. Snack foods would work or a pot luck. I am game for any or all.
I will drop by soon and check things out. I think some of the area garden club women volunteer at the center. We might even post a flier.
D

That sounds like a perfect plan.

I can bring a cooler with ice and some drinks and cups. That'll sold the beverage problem.

So let's plan on everyone bringing their own lunch, but if enough people show up in this thread during the next couple weeks, we'll see about upgrading our lunch plans.

dave

Jacksonville, TX(Zone 8a)

Sounds good. We will see how many are interested in coming then go from there. I can bring a cooler of ice and drinks too.
I can not cook anything but we may have watermelon, J'ville tomatos and blue and black berries. They should be coming ripe by then.
D

Great!

(Phyllis) Flint,, TX(Zone 7b)

ooo blueberries yummy.......brown bag is fine and I agree IF we have enough commit we can do potluck

I know I posted the link to here in another thread for a newbie last night so maybe that will help get others in

DdeTex the next 10 days of school I am told are gonna be busy ones with field trips I know in the last 2 weeks I have been home in between routes maybe 3 days the rest I have had field trips....and this coming Tuesday I get to go to 6 Flags for the day!!!!!

I will holler at cocoa and see what her schedule is to see if we can do anything soon.
If nothing else I may pop over then I can grab her tree and get it to her by the 8th in buffalo....but we will see.

Sorry to be so wishy washy, I hope to be there, I might be there, I just don't know yet.

David, If I can't make it I'd like to send some plants to you through Mibus. All my goodies from your house are doing well.

McKinney, TX(Zone 8a)

I hope I can come too. Ever since Cocoa let me know about how great the nurseries in Jacksonville were, I have been wanting to visit..... With the roundup on June 8th in Buffalo and taking the kids back and forth to summer camp in June, I might not be able to pull it off though.

Had to edit because I did not proofread. Whoops

I know you too and I just have this gut feeling you'll make it even if just for a lil while.......the nurseries we went to were great too when cocoa and I went....worth the trip so you can come visit at the RU and hit the nurseries too LOL

Gilmer, TX

I'm in and plan to drag Lorraine along too. We wanted to come to Buffalo but the date didn't work out for me. Plus this will give me more time to get things ready after school is out.

(Phyllis) Flint,, TX(Zone 7b)

10 more days here in Tyler and we are done!!!!!!!!! days like today make me wish it was sooner as it sure is hot on the bus...but I'm looking forward to meeting more DGers in East Texas

Fate, TX(Zone 8a)

tyler, palestine, nacogdoches, lufkin? huh?
how far from FATE? lol.

this is certainly worth considering for me as all of these people would be "new" to me and that means "new" plants. the only reason i couldn't come is the price of gas. so i have to wait and see unless the wagon is ready by then.

Buffalo, TX(Zone 8b)

Omigosh 20 days after the one here in Buffalo, can I possibly? Will I splurge on the gas? I am going to be thinking about it for sure.

Brown bagging it sounds like an easy way to go. More time to visit and not so much time in the kitchen.

Barbara, you can come here to bring Jack after your vacation. If he doesn't go on vacation with you, then you can come pick the lil' buger up from here if he stays. Unless of course if he wants to stay longer, then you can just come anyway. We can go together from here then.

I love these things, I think I'm addicted. If only gas were cheaper!

Charlene

(Becky) Colmesneil, TX(Zone 8b)

Charlene.. RU are only once a year..lol You gonna let a little thing like $4.00 a gallon of gas get in your way?lol

I am thinking about this too. Would love to meet some more great dgers!! Gotta see how dh does.. don't want to kill him yet! lol

Becky

(Phyllis) Flint,, TX(Zone 7b)

oh come on Beck he will make it mine has and this last one over at Broncs he really enjoyed himself talking with the other DH's that the female DGers drug along....of course works good for us since I am the computer person at home and he is retired and at home so he doesn't meet alot of new people......it's a way for both of us to meet people and make some new friends with only being here almost a year now

OK, I'm getting excited as this will be my first RU. I see and read post some of you made and know of the great things you grow. There are several in the local Master Garden program that will be there. Some will have great things to trade. Another good thing is I live only 10 minutes from Love's Lookout so we can come by my place and just dig what you want. Of course, I will bring a load too. I know there will be a nice selection of good sized trees from one person. The bargins in plants can make up for the gas prices.
Mamajack- I think we traded before and I look forward to meeting you.
So load the wagon and come on down- you will win a prize !
Charlene- Same for you on coming. You have lots of things too. It will be worth it to come.
Cocoa and Mibus-Hope both of you can mke it. I have some wants for you, I'm sure. Glad the things you got earlier are doing well.
Sweezel- get up a car pool and come on down. The GH's near by are good ones. We may get a group together and go there after we have finished up at the Lookout.
Becky- Maybe you can get some of the Lufkin folks together and make it.
Do we need to start a Have/Want list ? That might help some of you. For me if you want it and I run out then we can go to my house and dig it up.
Looking forward to this RU.

I am SO excited about this as I was not able to make the Dallas swap last year. I hope to make it but won't know until it's a little closer. Our business takes us out of town on relatively short notice (a couple of weeks). I have some cuttings already in the greenhouse that I was going to plant along our driveway but now I'll save them for the swap. I'll also start some others and start working on a list of what I have. YIPPEEE!! Hey, has anybody else noticed how late the butterflies are this year? I finally saw an American Lady yesterday and a young swallowtail on my phlox this morning. Two years ago we were overrun by now. I think all of that rain last spring really upset our local ecosystem because there were a lot less last year too. Bummer. Sorry to sidetrack - am very excited about the swap. Thanks for the D-mail, Dave!! =o)

Mama, what's the name of that nursery (organic tea room and Texas natives) in Edgewood? Sweezel has family she visits in Wills point and I wanted to tell her about that place and can't remember the name.

David, one of my big concerns. Is Love's Lookout kid friendly? I may have the younger ones with me. Love's Lookout isn't of the side of a cliff or anything like that? With a name like "lookout" it made me wonder.

Jacksonville, TX(Zone 8a)

The Lookout is on the side of a high hill but is very safe. It is fenced off and no one can get close to the edge. It is a very nice, large rest stop with clean rest rooms and nice picmic areas. This is very kid friendly.
Come on down.
Hope Mibus and I can meet up up soon so I can give her your flowering almond. It is growing well.
DD

McKinney, TX(Zone 8a)

Cocoa, my extended family's land is actually in Edgewood, so even better. The family reunion there is this weekend but I am going to miss it because we are going up to the lake in Oklahoma for Memorial Day. Too bad I did not know about the nursery before or I might have chosen the family reunion over Oklahoma. LOL

About the lookout, go to the map link Dave posted, click on "More photos, videos, and user-created maps" and expand the pic that looks like it has a white fence in it. This looks like a lookout from a high-point in that area. I guess that's where the name came from??

Here's a good representation of the view from Love's Lookout. It's very pretty!

(Becky) Colmesneil, TX(Zone 8b)

DD thanks for the welcome, but dh had 2 major surgeries in 5 weeks..lol gotta see how he does for a few... but my mouth is watering..lol and my eyes are twitching...I think I will be getting an addiction for these RU's!
Becky

I started a new thread for trade lists:

http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/851763/

Jacksonville, TX(Zone 8a)

Thanks Dave for the trade list.

Mamajack- maybe we did not do a trade, just dreamed it since you grow so much unique plants. Hope you can come, hear lots of nice things about you, even Dave said you were a good one.

Becky-Hope you get to come even if for a short time. Understand about health problems.

Cocoa- The area has an old rock fence/wall around it. The photo is from the large rest room area.

(Phyllis) Flint,, TX(Zone 7b)

question IF and that is a big IF ...a person has "produce" from the garden can that be used in a trade too?
not sure what I'll have ready then but it is a month away so never know but thought I better ask in case

(Maggi) Big Sandy, TX(Zone 8a)

OK, Ken and I will be there. I will close the nursery for the day!

Jacksonville, TX

Well, count me in. I can never pass up an opportunity to accumulate more plants, lol. Others on this thread can totally vouch for me ;0) I love potlucks; if we decide to go that route, count me in. My husband bought me a KitchenAid mixer so I have to put it to good use!

I've never been to a RU, but I'm excited!

(Phyllis) Flint,, TX(Zone 7b)

maggidew what nursery????
don't mean to sound ummm dumb but I am still learning what all is where near by
I know Big Sandy north of Tyler and I have yet to venture that way yet so please enlighten me!!!

msdolittle super you are coming!!!
this will be fun for sure

Phyllis

Jacksonville, TX(Zone 8a)

Mibus- I know I would trade plants for a sack of new potatoes or other produce. Bring it. Ken and maggiedew have super plants.
Msdoolittle-Welcome, think this will be fun. Have we met ? D-mail me on who you are.
Maggiedew- Great that you and Ken are coming. I have wanted to come your way and check out your things. Can not wait to see your have list.
This is getting exciting !
D

I've brought produce to roundups before and had no trouble giving them all away, so definitely bring what extras you have!

Seguin, TX(Zone 8b)

Ok....apparently I missed this somewhere....Dave, when did you move to Jacksonville?

Kim

Last October. :)

Como, TX(Zone 7b)

Do you have to have something to trade inorder to go to one of these things? I'm new to all this and don't want to do anything 'tacky'.

Jacksonville, TX(Zone 8a)

J-wife come on down, gardeners as the most generous people around. My moto is what I give away will always return ten fold. You will meet nice folks that will be so much help to new gardeners.
If you have no plants and feel bad then bring potting soil, used pots or some Mirical grow. All gardeners never have too much of that stuff but you do not need to bring anything.
DD

Thanks for the links and photos. Looks safe enough, as long as no one goes daring the kids to scale any fences or walls;0)

The turn out looks like it will be good. Here's hoping I get to meet you all!

Seguin, TX(Zone 8b)

Good grief...I guess I have been out of the loop! Well, congrats on the move. I think this would be a bit far to travel unfortunately, but you all have fun!

:) Kim
