Confederate Rose won't bloom

Jonesboro, GA(Zone 7b)

A year ago in the spring I bought a small Confederate Rose. It only had one stalk and I didn't expect much then. Then this year it came up looking great with several stalks, it is now about 4' tall and very healthy but not a sign of a bloom. It is in full sun and in pretty good composted dirt - how long should it take?

Also my beautiful yellow Brug has not yet put out a bloom this year, it is about 8' tall, 3 years old and had over 100 on it at once last year - what gives?

Some roses will bloom on the previous years canes. So next year you should see lots of Confederates! I don't know about the Brug...But if you post on the Brugs and Datura forum I bet some of the growers there will have some input on it!

Azalea--My Confederate Rose usually blooms in late, late summer. Last year it bloomed about a week before our first frost, so the blooms didn't last long. But, the year before it bloomed and we enjoyed it for serveral weeks before frost. These are beautiful plants. Mine is a mixture of pinks and varigated pink/white. What color is yours?

Hi Zany, I thought I was supposed to cut it back after it died down like the hardy hibiscus, am I wrong? Should I just leave it like a hydrangea?

Susan; I didn't know they came in different colors. I thought the blossoms all started out white and gradually turn red. Haven't read much on it as you can see. Still would like to get together with you if you have time since we live so close.

:{ Ignore me! I thought we were talking about a rose bush! Blush! I know nothing at all about Hibiscus except that they are lovely in the photos I have seen.

That's ok Zany - we all have our "senior moments" lol.

Yes, It has several y's. I went out and mixed a gallon jug of Miracle Grow, punched a small hole in it and let her drip. I feel so stupid now that I have neglected it so long. It just looks so healthy I didn't think it needed anything more than TLC. I did dig down last year and put some dry water crystals deep in the dirt and I use a lot of compost so I don't fertilize much of anything. Thanks so much for jogging me back to reality.
