Hosta Pics

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Bill your yard is beautiful, well done!
I love 'Orange Marmalade' and 'A Touch of Class'!!!!

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

thx again - not really sure how everyone can tell be all the close up's of the hosta's:) I have off the top of my head 11 beds in the back plus down the rock wall border and not including the veggy garden. Then another 6 or 7 side/front. three or four more next to the driveway and on the other side of the driveway a huge one with two others closer to the garage.
I will take a walk around with camera in a couple weeks when everything is through with spring clean up/remodeling.
a boy has to keep busy - i use to golf on the weekends

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

I have 13 (I think) flower beds....most have daylilies in them along with a few other perennials. I just started with hosta's a few years ago so no big plamts yet.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Only 13, Celeste! (Guess you're not superstitious.)

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

You made me count them...now I don't want to tell how many. It's more than 13.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

Just saw pictures of HVX Naaaaaaaasty.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

No - please don't, Celeste! You probably can sleep in more beds than GW!

Bill:

Your wife is from Troy? That's in the neighborhood. The kids from Troy and the kids where I lived growing up went to the same high school. Wouldn't it be something if I knew her?

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

she is 47 - don't tell anyone.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

PIxie i didn;t realize how many beds I had as well.

And for those who placed bets. Brown WON!!!

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

Yeaaaah Bill.

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

Thom and everyone else who posted pics.....Like Candyce, I am enjoying looking at all of your photos and hope to be able to ID my own through your pics.

wha - what a lovely garden area you have!

Victor - I like your Junes too, and I note that they are planted in those little stones you have become disenchanted with. LOL

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

ge- she will notice - the trick is to get them in the ground and looking good before she see's them. Early am is the best time to do this from years of experience.

Boxford, MA(Zone 6a)

I took some hosta pics, too! I posted them on the Hosta Forum. http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/852361/

Boxford, MA(Zone 6a)

Great hostas, everyone!!! I feel terrible b/c all of you have such immaculate mulch. I use dead leaves & pine needles b/c they are FREE, and I have too many plants to buy mulch for, anyway.
I am sooo happy that my 'White Feather' lived! It was new last year, and I replanted it 3 times b/c I kept hearing how it had to have just the right amount of light to survive. It seems no worse for wear!
My biggest problem this year is a happy problem! I moved a few established hostas, and this spring they emerged in their old spots as well as their new ones. It's messed up my labeling system, and I'll be posting a few "what's that hosta?" threads.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Wow - White Feather is amazing. How does it photosynthesize??

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

dido on white feather - have to check it out

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Had to do a double-take on your post, Bill! Triggered an interesting image...

Kershaw, SC(Zone 8b)

Victor-Most of the white leaved hostas start to come out white, and then slowly over the summer turn greenish...this usually let's the plant store enough energy to return next year. The only thing stopping me from getting any of the white leaved ones, like 'White Walled Tires,' 'White Undies,' or 'White Feathers,' is what was touched on, if you place them in the wrong place they can just fry, but, if you place them in the wrong place, too much shade, they won't make enough energy to return.

I hate being on the fence about hostas...lol.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Sounds like just a couple of AM hours of sun is ideal.

Bill:

I guess I wouldn't know her, then, as I am much older than your dear, sweet wife. I'm glad that 'brown' won, though!!

Boxford, MA(Zone 6a)

My 'White Feather' is in a Northeast facing corner ;0) It gets some dawn sunbeams, but nothing else for the rest of the day. It does turn green gradually over the summer.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Do you have any late season pics? I'd like to see how green it gets.

Boxford, MA(Zone 6a)

Victor, no- it started to turn green then became deer fodder. I was wiped out overnight last year, sometime mid-season. I don't think the antlered bandits left a leaf of any of my 200+ hostas. This year I broke the bank and purchased a portable, solar-powered motion detector that has 2 alarms and a water spray. Then I placed wire fencing on the ground, then sprayed deer repellent. So far, I've only lost a few leaves to slugs. BUT IT'S ONLY MAY!!!!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Ugh - I know that battle too well.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

Victor you are a piece of work!

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

Unfortunately for our finances, I, too, am newly a hosta fan. I like the rare expensive minis (because I can squeeze them in, and they're not bigger than my house, LOL). I dare not go to the hosta forum as Melissa did - I'm sure I'd be in big trouble. Or mini trouble.

Maine, United States(Zone 5b)

Ooooh, hosta, my favorite!

Here are a few of my minis from today

Pandora's box in the container, Teaspoon, and Blue Mouse Ears. Teaspoon is probably my second favorite hosta in the whole garden.

Just moved Queen of the Seas to a place befitting of it's regal status. The is the first mail order hosta from a reputable grower that I purchased last year, and I am thrilled with the size of it this season so far. (Looked great out of the box last year, too)

Wasthe reputable grower a mail order nursery?

Maine, United States(Zone 5b)

Yes, Hallson's. I only ordered one hosta, and he was kind enough to send me a very nice bonus hosta, too. Which also looks great this year- I highly recommend them. After my recent experience with HVX, I sorely regret that all the hosta in my garden didn't come that way. They all will from now on.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

Noreaster: I have also ordered from Hallsons. I ordered Ferns and they sent an extra. I am impressed with the way they were sent.I love to get freebies.
I had considered Hosta from them but Bluestone is having a 1/2 off sale so I loaded up.
24 Plants
Big Daddy,Blue Cadet,gold drop,Frances Williams,Francee
They ship tomorrow. The sale ends June1 at midnight.
I'm not crazy about how Bluestone packs things in those plastic peanuts but This new house has lottsa gardens that need filling and the sale helps next summer look good.

Have not ordered hostas for a few years but always loved hostafarm.com. I just checked for them and the page did not come up. Wonder if they're out of business.

Boxford, MA(Zone 6a)

I've gotta give props to New Hampshire Hostas!!! They're amazing!!! It's an easy drive for most of us, but they do web sales, too.

Maine, United States(Zone 5b)

I also visited NH Hostas last year, because I am in Maine. Their roots weren't anywhere near as big as the two I received from Hallson's, but a few of them are a decent size this year (First Frost, and Manhattan, which came up with four eyes) The others are still pretty small with just one or two eyes. They have a nice selection though, and the owner has a Boston Terrier...worth my business just for that! ;)

Jo Ann, it's tought to beat the prices with that Bluestone sale! I did get three Frances Williams from them a few years ago and those are looking good this year (I have them totally protected from any sun to prevent that ugly burning they get along the edges).

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

I am still buying plants and can't believe it.
Brent and Beckys 50% off is going on now, ordered
Penstamon Red Riding Hood
Rodgersia Am looking for minnie hostas most sales are for the big to medium ones.
I'll check out NH Hostas

Maine, United States(Zone 5b)

I think NH hostas carries some nice minis.

Here is 'Parhelion' today, with Sweet Woodruff. This one is the opposite of mini!

I did check NH Hostas and they do have nice ones but as I have said before I am not buying anymore plants.
YEAAAAAH When pigs fly.
I do like their plants but the 24 hostas fro m Bluestone will have to do for now they were $5.00 each thet inclused three Big Daddys, Frances Williams, etc.

Maine, United States(Zone 5b)

I know, me too...I'm really trying to stop with the spending. Shouldn't be hard, since I'm out of room...but still, I find things to buy. I'm outta control.

This is another site the people on the hosta forum recommend, and they have good sales...they have one late in the season to get rid of the ones with the summer uglies, and I think there are some good discounts.

noreaster - I love your mini's. I didn't even know they exist. That teacup is adorable....I think I'll have to check those out.
