Hosta Pics

Kershaw, SC(Zone 8b)

Since these don't really fall into "spring flowering" section, nor do they follow (for me atleast) into the "just bought" or "never planted" section...I figured I would start a hosta thread...I'm sure I'm not the only one who is addicted...*cough*...I mean, likes Hostas. Don't get mad, I need to search through a few shoe boxes to get the names of them all, and will edit the pics as I find the names. Here are the ones that have "opened" up so far, some are favorites of mine! Well, who am I kidding? They are all favorites of mine.

'Krossa Regal'

'Earth Angel' with a JM and BMC. For those of you guessing, Japanese Maple and 'Britt Marie Crawford' a Ligularia(sp?)

'Revolution' a personal favorite. This year I'm going to get 'Independence' which is the reverse of 'Revolution' and I just got 'Pathfinder' which is a sport of it also!

This hosta is near the same JM and BMC, along with some daff foliage, and a slow as anything dwarf "eared" lambs ear (stachys)

Very nice, Thom. The Spring Blooms thread is open to foliage! No discrimination. I used to state that in each new thread but have not been doing it lately.
Some of my faves are Halcyon, Kabitan, Paul's Glory, Krossa Regal and anything really bright yellow/gold. For fragrance, Aphrodite, plantaginea and Royal Standard.

Beautiful hostas, Thom!

Thom - you will post when all your beautiful daylilies bloom, correct?

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Thom, your first one looks like Krossa. Is it?

Kershaw, SC(Zone 8b)

Sean-Yes! I'm looking forward to everyone else's DL pics also! Especially Pirl, Pixie and Polly!

Victor-I believe it is. But I have 2 others that look like it, so...lol. I think I have 'Regal Splendor' someplace.

I didn't feel that the hostas were being discriminated against, I just feel they need their own thread...lol. I'll probably feel the same way about DL's though. I have about 30-40 more pics to post here...for some reason it was taking between 7-10 minutes per pic to come up! So after several, I took a break, went to bed...ya know, life...lol.

I'll post more as I get the time.

Wow Thom, you are a hostaholic! I've got several kinds, but I've forgotten the names. Maybe you can help if I up load pics? Jog my memory perhaps.

I too like hostas and you have some great photo's there! I really like the 2 tone ones!!!

Here's one for you, Dawn. One of my faves - 'June'.

Well Thom, I have identified a really huge hosta that I had through the info that you sent me. It is Blue Angel. It was so huge that I divided it last fall but evidently there were some roots left that are growing. So if anyone wants some blue angel babies let me know. I seem to have 3 needing a good home. And any Hosta experts that can help me out with this .....much appreciated. It came home with two tags that I did not notice when I purchased it.

Hard to tell from that photo and without seeing the size, shape, color and texture of the grown plant.

Hi Thom,
I love hostas, too.
Your second photo looks like my Frances Williams.
I will post a pic in the next couple of days of mine and we can compare.
Have you ever tried growing them from seed? It is so unbelievably easy.
I started some last year, by germinating them on top of seed starting soil, then stuffed them into the ground last fall and they are up as really nice size plants this spring! Cyndie

Cleveland,GA/Atlanta, GA(Zone 7b)

Thanks Cyndie. Electric shock memory. Most of mine are Francis Williams. I'll post.

Thanks! Laurel
I had to move my plant away from the house recently because it grew so large and was growing into the "no moisture" zone of the roof overhang. I thought that since I was moving it I would split it. But believe me, it took so much work just to get it up and into the new hole, that I had no energy left to divide it. I just pushed it into the new planting hole and left it. They are such tough plants!

Kershaw, SC(Zone 8b)

Cyndie, I know it's not 'Francis Williams.' I have that elsewhere...will post that. 'Francis Williams' is usually a little more green, and the margin more yellow, on top of that, the leaves are usually a lot more "quilted" in appearance, and, HUGE to boot! lol. I have to search through the shoeboxes still!

Here is my 'Francis Williams.' The thing is, depending on site, light, weather, maturity of the plant, TC vs OS, and time of season...all hosta will look different at some point or another, sort of like DL pics.

Love your Spilt Milk Thom. I have a baby one that I planted last year only has 2 eyes can't wait until it gets as big as yours is!

Victor your Junes are beautiful too. I have one of them I think I need more lol.

Since my yard is over half shade Hostas were the only thing I planted when I first started gardening. I went really crazy when I found out there were named hostas. (Yes there are those of us who thought at one time there is only green and varigated hostas.) Had hard time convincing my co-worker otherwise until I showed her a pic of my sum and sustanance. I have temporarily recovered from my hosta addiction thanks to Winter Sowing BUT seeing pics like these makes me want more.

P.s The next hosta on my wish list is the Hosta Fire Island. I saw it over on the hosta forum yesterday.

We have three hosta and I have no idea which cultivar they might be. Keep posting photos, everyone, of your hosta, and I might be able to spot mine in the group.

'X-Rated' Yes, the name of the hosta, not this posting! lol. I think this hosta is reverting, but not sure, will find out soon enough if it doesn't start to variegate. Then, I'll have a all green strange looking mini!

'Stained Glass' This one is going to have to be moved. The 'Spilt Milk' that I planted last year was really slow growing, I assumed it would continue to be a slow grower...boy am I wrong! Will have to move this guy a wee bit further out to the right, which I won't mind at all.

'Piedmont Gold' Really not all that "gold" yet, but it hasn't really been to kind, weather wise, for it to turn. I'm going to almost need to take pics in June/July to see the difference in the leaf color on all of these guys.

Love that last one, Thom.

Kershaw, SC(Zone 8b)

Ok, I'm done...the last one took over 7minutes to DL...lol.

Victor-Thanks! This is my 2nd year with it, and this year it's coming up like gang busters. I purchased it from a local nursery, so it should be pretty much available. I'm going to retake the pics of all of the hostas in the middle of June or early July, that way all of the "true" leaf color will be evident.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

That's a good idea. Why the slow downloads? Are you dial-up?

Kershaw, SC(Zone 8b)

Victor-Paul and I have Verizon's DSL. We actually don't have a phone line, it's called a "dry loop landline"...the only thing that is coming through the phone line is the DSL service. Some pics take about 20 seconds or so, others take upwards of 5-8 minutes, enough time that the screen goes dim, right before the screen saver comes on! lol.

Are you re-sizing your photos before uploading them to DG?
