I have a couple questions. I have 4 plants that I've started from seed in 4 separate pots.
1) Some leaves are brown, does that indicate sunburn>
2) What options do I have for supports? I have some extra fencing, can I make something out of that or is it essential for me to buy those tall round supports?
3) I was going to spread a powder insect killer today, but I've noticed that my tomatoes are staring to bloom, should I hold off? Will the powder deter pollinators?
Can we talk tomatoes?
1. Sunburned leaves turn white.
2. Anything that works for you!
3. I would hold off inless you absolutely have to use it. Depending on what you are using - it would most likely kill &/or deter bees.
1. Probably not sunburn, although tomatoes certainly don't mind a little shade out here. Which leaves (top, bottom, all over?) are turning brown, and are they crispy or limp? All-over brown, spotty brown, small dots of brown?
2. Like barhea7 said, supports can be anything that works for you. Depending on how big your plants are, the tall round ones that are narrower on bottom than they are on top tend to flop over when indeterminate plants get big and heavy, especially if we get any wind or if they make it as long as the monsoons. I have better luck with things that are less top-heavy.
3. Tomatoes are self-pollinated for the most part, so killing pollinators of your tomatoes isn't an issue--but bees will likely still visit, and you may hurt the pollinators of anything else you have growing, like zucchini, cukes, squashes, etc. Depends on what you're using and why, and how desperate you are. What are you trying to get rid of?
Do you have some pictures? that would certainly help us try to help you.
Why would you want to use insecticide? What insects are you having problems with?
