Ruined Rubber plant........

Cork, Ireland

I have a 6ft rubber plant that my new pup has destroyed, he has eaten all the leaves off up to about 2 feet from the top, then almost eaten through the main trunk of the plant. I have hormone rooting liquid and I was going to try to cut the trunk above the damage, coat in liquid and replant in the same pot ? Will this work ?

Please help soon as I think its nearly too late to save it...

It doesn't look good to me either, but it won't hurt to try saving it. I would cut it right below where that chewing took place ... eventually you should see new sprouts emerging from the stem that's still potted. I'm not sure the top part can be saved. It's real hard to see the leaves clearly in your photo but they look mottled and brown to me. You can still try to root that part that you cut off. The leaves may fall off from stress but if it takes root it should grow new leaves at some point. Good luck ... and I would be very careful with a pet around house plants ... many are poisonous. Puppies love to chew I know ... hopefully you can find him lots of chew toys and refocus him away from your plants.

Here's a list of plants and their level of toxicity: http://www.plantsciences.ucdavis.edu/ce/king/poisplant/tox-SCI.htm Ficus Elastica (Rubber Tree) is level 4

Hi, Thanks everyone, the trunk chew is only about 4 days old and the leaves are still dark green so I might be able to save both parts. Pup does have loads to occupy him but focused on this plant for some reason, leaves the other 10 or so plants in his reach on ground floor and garden alone but I think he saw this one as a challenge due to its height ;)

Thanks again for all the help,

Good luck with your Ficus tree!

I just noticed where you are from. My great grandparents were born in Cork, Ireland!
