One of the Hydrangeas that I planted last Spring isn't blooming. It bloomed last year, and I trimmed it back in late fall. All of the others are doing fine, and have lots of blooms but this one doesn't have one bloom on the bush. Does anyone know what could be the cause?
Hydrangea not blooming
In our area it's best not to prune Hydrangeas after the first week in August. They need time to set bloom nodes. If it is a traditional (non-remontant) hydrangea, you probably cut off the wood that would now have blooms. It will come back with blooms on old wood next year - you may get some later this year. I do very little hard pruning on my hydrangeas. By the way, they root very easily in our greenhouse climate. Good gardening.
Thanks Peony01- I didn't cut very much off of them, and did the same to the others that are in the garden, which now have blooms. So, when I trim it this year, how much do I cut off? I appreciate your help- Hydrangea is my favorite!
I prune only for looks in late July and into the first week of August. I then prune in Spring after the plant leafs out, and then only dead wood that shows. You should be able to see leaf nodes, so you don't want to prune below the first leaf nodes unless there is a great deal of unsightly (to you) wood between leaf nodes.
Thanks for the tips! Hopefully it will bloom for me next year!
