I saw this white flowered bush this morning. I didn't have my camera with me but I'm wondering if anyone can help me figure out the name of it. It's HUGE, probably 10 feet tall, 8 feet wide and 5 feet in diameter. The flowers look layered like a rose but just a tad longer and not as big around as a rose. The leaves are probably 2-3 inches long, not too big. The bush looks flowy and wispy. It's super full of flowers and leaves but not packed or thick. The stems or super long and flowy, not too stiff. PLEASE HELP me find the name.
What is the name of this huge white shrub bush
Hopefully someone from your area who knows what's in bloom now will recognize it from the description, but it would really help if you could go back and get a picture of it.
Well if I did that then I could just go up to their door and ask them what it is. But I'm not too much of a people person. Well really I just have a fear of rejection or I always think people are going to be mean.
UT,
If they love plants like all of us on DG, they probably won't mind a bit if you ask them what it is. Heck, they might even offer to give you a start off of it. I've struck up several good friendships over "flower conversations," LOL. And those new friends become good sources for plant trades and excuses to meet at each others homes for lunch.
if you are too shy and really want to know about that bush -- put a note in their mailbox asking the name - include a self addressed stamped envelope.
Is it too late for Mock-orange (Philadelphus) and do they grow in Texas?
Or maybe it could be some sort of Deutzia, there are a number of them that are blooming now and they've got that look too. Again I don't know how they'd do in TX, but I've noticed several popping up in the Plant ID forum over the last couple weeks so it's definitely the right time of year for bloom.
Here are the Deutzia's in PF so you can see if one matches http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/adv_search.php?searcher%5Bcommon%5D=&searcher%5Bfamily%5D=&searcher%5Bgenus%5D=deutzia&searcher%5Bspecies%5D=&searcher%5Bcultivar%5D=&searcher%5Bhybridizer%5D=&search_prefs%5Bblank_cultivar%5D=&search_prefs%5Bsort_by%5D=rating&images_prefs=both&Search=Search
And here's mock orange: http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/adv_search.php?searcher%5Bcommon%5D=&searcher%5Bfamily%5D=&searcher%5Bgenus%5D=philadelphus&searcher%5Bspecies%5D=&searcher%5Bcultivar%5D=&searcher%5Bhybridizer%5D=&search_prefs%5Bblank_cultivar%5D=&search_prefs%5Bsort_by%5D=rating&images_prefs=both&Search=Search
I was going to say Deutzia too but the description of the flowers seemed to large. I swear, ecrane, you and I are always on the same wavelength.
Great minds think alike! LOL Just watch, we'll both be wrong :-)
I thought it was that mock-orange but I think the flower part is more longer and more layers. I don't think it is the other one either. I parked on the side of the road and my car rubbed against the bush. I should have just rolled my window down and picked a small piece to take a pic of later. As far as going to meet the houseowner and having lunch, I'm young (25) and don't look like someone who would give a hoot about flowers. And it's probably a old stuck up hag that lives there (just my luck). (do you see what goes through my mind) When in reality it's probably this nice lady who would love to give me a clipping and a cup of tea but I just can't take a chance on it being the first. I make clothes for my daughter and don't have a great scenery at my house (trailer in the background) so I was gonna build a wooden fence along the front lawn and plant some big pretty flowered bushes or small flowered trees for scenery purposes. I was thinking gardenia's would be pretty and smell good too but then I saw these earlier this morning and I was just like, oh yeah, I wouldn't even need the wooden fence. They are so tall and full but not packed. They just looked like they would be great and they had gobs and gobs and gobs of blooms. My daughter loves loves loves picking flowers so she could pick them everyday and not run out. I'm gonna try to go by tomorrow after church and see if I can get a pic for you guys. Thank you so much for trying to help and hope you will know it tomorrow.
UT, a love of gardening knows has no age limits. I know several teens who love to garden. In fact, while I was raising my kids (daughter now 35, son 33) I let them both have a little corner of my veggie garden to make their own garden. They both still love to garden. My son (all 6' 4" of him) just loves houseplants. He can grow plants better than his girlfriend! As they say, you can't judge a book by it's cover, lol.
And I've found that older gardeners are often really happy to help out a younger gardener, they're excited to see younger people taking an interest in gardening and look at it as an opportunity to share their wisdom.
We have several teens on the forums that mix easily with the rest of us hags, lol! Plant love doesn't start after 40!!
Plant love doesn't start after 40!!?? Really? I always dreaded the day I'd turn 40 for fear that I would want to start gardening. A small part of me has always wanted to plant flowers and have a nice pretty yard but I know didly squat about anything, how much to water it, what to feed it, where to plant it, and it's very overwhelming. And sometimes even expensive. I went and got pics today. Had to act like a detective though cause neighbors were out looking at me all crazy. I'll try to post pics in the morning. Had my 4 yr old daughter with me and she had her window down. She kept saying scoot up mom, scoot up, I want that one. I would scoot up then she'd say No too far, back up mom. Even though she had tons right there at arms reach she wanted that one behind us. Needless to say the neighbors were definitely looking at me crazy, especially after I whipped my camera out and started taking pics.
Well if you'd like to garden, you've come to the right place to ask questions. Ask us ANYTHING you need to know--we love helping. And remember, the only dumb question is the one you don't ask. We all started out not knowing "diddly" about gardening. If you give it a try, I can almost guarantee you'll be hooked for life. And possibly the best part for you is that you don't even have to get face-to-face with us! LOL about your daughter. Kids are so uninhibited, aren't they? They really know how to have fun with life.
hey, girlfriend, you'r in texas, everyone knows how friendly us texans are ! for petes sake, go on up there and ask her, then tell her how much you love her taste in plants .the worst she can do is tell you to get off her property, she can't eat you alive . take your child with you , only a crazy person would insult you in front of your child . then it's thier problem , not yours.it ain't a gonna happen. think how good you will feel walking back to your car with all the information, and possibly a new friend!!!! sally
http://toptropicals.com/catalog/uid/Spiraea_sp.htm Do the flowers looks like ones in the top picture on this page?
If not, what did you mean when you said the flowers were smaller than a rose, but longer. It's the "longer" part that I can't quite picture. Maybe you know the name of the bush by now....if so, let us know.
Chris

Could it be this? http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/showimage/50407
Hey, rosysunset - your plant makes sense on the flower description. I hope we get to the bottom of this. I love a good mystery, and a solution. It's very satisfying!
The reason I thought of it was that my daughter was telling me all about a huge bush covered in white blooms. She just had to know what it was. It was a huge, 10 ft tall oleander doing it's thing in spades. lol
There are several different kinds which you can see in plant files. Red are the hardiest. The little one can't pick these flowers though -
All parts of plant are poisonous if ingested
Handling plant may cause skin irritation or allergic reaction
