Quoting:
Could this male Orchard Oriole be listening for insects hiding under the loose bark ?

Looks to me like it is scratching its face with its foot.
Quoting:
I get so excited when I see a hummingbird .... I don't know what type this is

Rufous Hummingbird.

Hi, dellrose...I saw a pair of Great crested's yesterday. I heard their loud "Wheep" at first and was able to track them down but they would not sit still long enough for me to get a picture.

Hi Linthicum...The yellow-breasted chat was the bird responsible for getting me interested in birdwatching. I was so intriqued by it's unusual sounds and with the fact I couldn't get a glimpse of it for the longest time but once I finally ID'd it I was hooked. I had gotten some video of it last year but it was this year before I got a picture of him. Mine's not as good as yours though but I was proud to finally get one after all that stalking I did!

Too much excitement for me today! All of a sudden a couple of Thrashers got very agitated in a Ephedra plant right next to my yard near the place I feed and water the birds.
In this photo you can barely see two thrashers and a sparrow in the shrub. There is something else in the shrub (bottom left) but you can only see it in the original size.

There must of been a dozen birds or more attacking this rattlesnake. He was striking at them and they were not backing down.
My husband was out running errands but when I called him he said "I'll be right there - I'm coming down the street now"
He relocated the Rattler in the desert away from our home. The birds were watching him from nearby shrubs and I believe he is their hero! :-)

OMG Angele!! Good job by your DH and you getting the little birdies out of harms way!! How brave of the birds and DH!!

Crazybirdlady...I almost got another shot of the Great Crested...but almost doesn't count!!

Marlton, NJ

Wow thats scarey angele! I'll bet the DH is their hero!

Great pics guys!

When I took that first photo I didn't even know the snake was there. I was hoping Rudy Roadrunner would come by and save the day but he was a no-show. I didn't know the smaller birds would attack a rattlesnake.

Wilmar, AR(Zone 8a)

I'm happy for the birds but even happier that you weren't bitten!!!

Great photo Angele, I see 4 birds and the snake, in your photo. One of the bird is unfamiliar to me. top of photo to the left It's brown with blackish tuff on it's head and a slightly curved beak. what is it?

Burn, I think what you are speaking of is one of the Curved-bill Thrashers. You can see the black on his head is a shadow in this crop.
