I'd say between 18" and 2'. Its finished blooming now. Are the ones you've seen in your area still in bloom?
Cottage Garden Seed Swap & Chat #12
Yes but that could be due to climate difference.
Just a note on the Silene armeria... I sowed some last year, and they only grew a couple inches tall last summer in their little pots and looked quite insignificant. This year, they took off, just shot up, and have been blooming like mad! Lovely!
I'm so glad you mentioned Silene armeria; it made me look it up and I realized its something I have growing from a wildflower mix and I've been wondering about its id! These were direct sown on April 26 and are blooming now, but very airy and delicate looking. critter, did yours reseed or did the plant return after winter? If it will come back I need to move these from the mix to more sun I believe.
Look! I've finally got Shastas! These were wintersown last year, all that from 1 seed! I think this is 'White Knight'
Did I tell you the one about the guy who got lost in his garden?
Really its nice to see everyone is still hanging around. I had to scroll through about 4 pages to get here and I really hope that someone has been clever enough to glean all of the info here into one good batch. I think it would be the only garden book I would need lol.
I hope that everyone here is doing good and has a garden somewhere where it rains. I know somebody else must be getting all of my rain lol.

Wow Gemini all your flowers are so beautiful! I can't believe that shasta was from one seed wow! : )
Pamsue you had good luck with the poppies they look great!
I would love to hear the answer to the question about the silene armeria too. The ones I started indoors are planted out now and they are little tiny things with little tiny flowers. In the plant files they are listed as annual and perennial, and all the places that sell the seeds list them as annual, so I'm not sure what they are supposed to be.
I got the courage to pull over in front of one of the houses I saw the flowers I'm trying to id and got a pic from far away, maybe it will help solve the mystery.
hmmm Meredith-I wish I knew what those were-I would truthfully, just go up knock & ask!! I have done it before and will probably again:)
Pam-your malva is Purple Satin right?? I love that one:)
hi fairy
im not sure which malva..ive been selecting the large dark purple and yanking out the others. i got the seed from a lady in town she had some growing in her flowerbed and they are not as tall as mine..she has them in full sun..and i do not.
they do look similar to purple satin..some are more fuller than others
pam sue
Oooh I love it, I started something similar last year and I hope it will bloom for me. How old is yours?
Fairy, I was thinking I would - but no one was home. I posted it on the plant id forum I'll let ya know if any one Id's it : )
Those purple malva are lovely! I've got 'Zebrina' scattered around, but haven't managed to get any others going out there.
Neal, the Silene armeria overwintered in their pots and bloomed for the first time this year. I'm hoping they'll scatter some seeds around for volunteer blooms, and I'll try to collect some seed also. I need to download some more photos... LOL, I need some at-home time to sort and edit pics!
I looked up the Silene and LOVE IT!! How pretty!!
Pam-I am about 90% sure it is purple satin-I had it last year and am confused because I don't see it this year!! No clue what happened to it:(
hi
i would assume the malva would be a hardy annual/biennial in colder zones....this is my second year growing these and they are the ones i w/s in 2006/2007 they last about two or three years for me and they reseed ..i cut them back after blooming and they bloom again in late summer. I think if you sow the seed in the fall they would bloom the following year (the same for w/s ).
I think I have that malva, I threw some seed out apparently last year and one came up underneath on of my greenhouse by the back of the house, such a pretty flower, I don't see how it's growing there though too much shade but I'm going to save some seeds from it, I'm wondering if it's mrs. barnsley maybe, I think that is the name that I got in a trade a couple of years ago. Mine is only about two feet high, kind of hard to tell cause it's hugging the ground reaching for sun lol I'm afraid to dig it up don't want to kill it.
Lovely pictures everyone, thank you for posting them! I don't know about anyone else, but this thread has become like a big ol' seed catalogue and I've already started shopping for next year's Piggy Swap. Buahahahaha. I must try to be more diligent myself taking pictures as some of my garden pretties have already come and gone and are now nothing but a memory.
Hey I've got to tell you....remember me telling you that I had so much surplus that I made up some containers to "sell?" (I put quotes around "sell" because even though I took money for them I didn't ask much more than I actually had in them.) I finally worked up the nerve a couple of weeks ago to put a small sign on the corner and when all was said and done I had gotten rid of all but one basket....AND not to friends and relatives either, LOL. Then my friends and relatives were disappointed because they didn't get any so I was commisioned to make 9 more! Unfortunately all the good container stuff had already been used, but fortunately my favorite nursery had all their annuals 1/2 off. Those guys got some kick-butt containers for CHEAP. I will probably post some pics on the container forum later when I have time to fiddle with it.
Today is D-Day for me. I have everything planted (or given away) except one last flat and that's going in today. Hopefully once everything is planted I can get the general clean-up finished, then I can let people in. LOL. I've been getting all kinds of requests for "garden tours" and I keep telling everyone they have to wait 'cause everything is still a mess. One gal is tired of asking and told me to just call her in September when I come up for air. LOL!
hi lea
your malva that you have..if it has a velvety leaf..it would be a lavatera ( barnsley ) and the malvas have a smooth shiny leaf.
lala jane...your surplus plants ..what a lovely surprise..and now you know what to do with them after all..this should keep you rather busy and that is a good thing
i think it is time for a new thread...getting rather long dont you think ?
pam sue
La, that is soo funny you got rid of all of your plants that you didn't want then ended up buying for friends to plant lol
Ok pamsue :) it has a smooth leaf but I like it, I don't think it's zabrina may be though it's been a while since I've seen that one lol
I'm headed back out so I can get some pretty flowers like everyone else on here :) Love your alls pictures!
I was wondering the same thing about people in the flood areas...hope Suzy and everyone is ok.
Fairy, your new bed is really nice :) and I like your mm malva!
My family and I all worked outside today trying to get more planted etc etc :))))))))
Congrats Lala_Jane on getting all your seedlings taken care of...I'm hoping to be right behind you. I still have more to give away. My mom planted the salvia bonfire's today outside the veggie garden and will plant her "naughty marieta marigolds" in front of them next week. I planted nasturtium seeds from Shirley1md today in a hanging basket.
We are still hoping for rain soon here...maybe tonight, tomorrow and Monday. I'll believe it when we get it :)
My salvia bonfires are just starting to come back from last years reseeding some are about two inches high and the maltese cross some are just starting to come back from reseeding but the plants from last year are on their way out on blooming, I really like that maltese cross and it's so tall :)
Wind, I know what you mean on the rain "I'll believe it when it rains" lol I'm just getting around to planting my nasties but I have to look them up to see what is what I forgot lol
Fairy, 14 40lb. bags? OMG, I'm wondering how much mulch it's going to take for my middle garden lol I'm sure I'll go thru at least a couple of truck loads, at least for all of the beds, I'm going to have to find help when it's time for the mulch lol
I hear ya on the mulch Lea. Since I don't own a pick-up I had to have some delivered and with the price of gas right now.....OUCH!
How long do the maltese cross stay in bloom? I WS'd some of Weeze's seed, but if any of them came up they I missed them. I do like the look of it though and might consider trying again, but someone told me the bloom time is very short with those.
Lea-I am actually a few short!!! I should have more like 18-20 to do it right!!LOL We used 12 on the other bed, and then next year we will put about 8 more on the other bed and about 10 more on this one-then I should be good for a bit:)
I am so excited-I made a deal w/ my Grandpa-I plant him a flower bed-I picked Gaillardia Burgundy, Tojaker, & Goblin, Cranesbill geranium, Pallida, Ruby Giant & purple cones, Crazy Shastas, Edelweiss, creeping Jenny, another one I can't remeber-GC w/ little eyllow flowers, Pink thirfit and a couple more things-and he makes me a compost tumbler!! He did-he used a 50gl. plastic drum and made a hatch for me and a stand for it-I just have to assemble it and get a screen for the hole-that way I can tip it and whatever falls out the screen is ready:) I am excited as from what I understand, these make compost in about 2 weeks or so as opposed to 3 mos!! Now I can gets my beds ammended faster!!YEAH!! Just had to share!!
La, I have a truck with a topper on it and dad has a hissy fit every time I want to take the top off to do something, even though he never drives anymore :) So I'm borrowing the neighbors truck when I get it lol His bed isn't as big as mine though. On a truck load of mulch do they charge you the same for a truck load if it is a smaller truck and not a bigger bed? I may have to take the top off if they do :)
My maltese cross has been in bloom for at least three weeks seems like it anyway, I'm satisfied with my blooms I'm going to plant more next year I love the height too! Not to mention those red blooms :) Does anyone know if we should cut those down or half way after they bloom?
Fairy congrads on the tumbler! I have one and it does make compost faster! You'll love it! Bad news on the mulch though, I'm going to spend a fortune in mulch LOL
Has anyone heard from Suzy, yet?
Hi everyone!
Everyone seems to be planting out stuff - and I am still potting itty bitty plants. today I potted up 84 Blue Clips campanula. Does anyone else still have really tiny plants?
Am I doing something wrong?
P. S. I love all the pictures - especially the malva - I have been trying to grow Malva mystic merlin for over a year! I have one plant that survived the winter. I am not sure what the problem is. . . . and I really want these for the South garden on the terrace!
Good question, BlueGlancer. Gee, now I am worried . . . how many of us have been affected by the floods?
Suzy hasn't posted that I have seen, in awhile. Does anyone have her phone number? I'm alittle worried.
Suzy is fine she's just been busy :) She'll probably be on in a little bit. I just talked to her.
Lucy, my skullcap is getting ready to bloom :) The vine is doing good but no blooms yet and thanks for leaving a bloom on it for me so I could see what it looked like they are soo pretty!!!
I'm glad to hear she is ok. I'm just a worry wart. : )
Lea, maybe throw some bloom buster to the vine, and speed it up a tad. You will love it when it gets clusters and clusters of blooms and the BF's start landing. : )
Bloombuster? It hasn't gotten much taller yet don't really think it's ready for that? And where do I get it when it gets ready, can you use that on the morning glories? I've got to go outside it's really nice right now but I'll be back later for your answer Lucy lol I didn't think we were suppose to use fertilizer on vines?
Glad to hear she is OK-I was worried too:)
