Cottage Garden Seed Swap & Chat #12

Greenville, IN(Zone 6a)

La you're registered of you use it to send money :) I'm pretty sure anyway.

I just got some of my bee balm and phlox planted finally! They have been in pots forever but as Suzy knows, she saw my plants lol I have a LOT of phlox to plant. There was a bumble bee on one of my pink bee balms the whole time while I was trying to plant it LOL

I saved the 20 oz pepsi bottles all winter cause I freeze some of them for my dog when it's hot and just cut them with a box knife to get the ice out so he can have it and I use them to put my vinegar and water in for the hot days to drink outside, I freeze about two inches of water in the bottom and just fill them with the water and apple cider vinegar the rest of the way, just figured they would be great to set over seeds that I plant in the ground so I gave my son a bunch to cut the bottoms out for me I probably have enough to use for next year and this fall too, a whole garbage bag full lol I still have a few more castor bean seeds to plant out and my nasties

Seale, AL(Zone 8b)

Just coming in from the hit for afew to some air conditioning, and a cup of java before heading back out. Gonan be 98 here today and again no rain.

Tuink.. I look all the time for T&M's half price sale. Love it. It like being able to get two packages for the price of one. For the free package they was supposed to send some chocolate digitalis. The package only says Digitalis parviflora, so don't know if that chocolate or not.

Got me some osteospermum pluvials the tetra sunshine Giants. Don't know if they gonan make it here or not. If not there wil be a bunch of seed for the next swap for sure. And I grabbed two packages of the Carnation reailing mixed colors. They was out of them at the begining of the season, so was glad they had gotten some in.

Thanks Tuink and Lebug. I gott akeep the air conditioner running and keep it about 80 in here to try and save on th eelectric bill, so wil probably start them here indoors and then move out under the shade trees when they big enough.

Sound slike this Kanautia gonan be a cool plant. Glad I decided to get some. Love tryign new things.

LeBug didn't know that they had pastel colors. Sound spretty. I can't throw anythign just out into the yard for awhile. Gonna call here in a little bit and see when a coupel of my friends can come and clear about an 8th of an acrea of land of trees. Nothing growing there but trees and weeds and it some halfay decent groudn that cna be used to grow on.

Don't know what I gonan do with the downed trees though sinc ewe can't do any burning cuz of the major fire hazards with no rain. It hard hard to dispose of small trees but ya get these 60 foot and above ones and they a real pain to get rid of the wood.

Nasties are so much fun. if you been cold they may not have come up yet. Some times they wil come right up and sometimes it takes them forever and a day.

Tuink put an excellent pic of the leave sup. ya cant miss them for sure they are really distinctive.

if you pay with paypal already you are registered and all them folks would have to do is send the money to your email addy that you use with paypal. and again Tuink right. when it been sent you will get an email at the addy you use for your payapal. They probably haven't sent it yet. Maybe a gentle reminder that you haven't recieved it yet and just checkign to make sure it was sent.

break time over, so time to go back to the sweat factory, Hope everybody else stays cool and if ya need rain ya get it and if ya don't pray it stops in your areas.

Winchester, KY(Zone 6a)

La, if you log in to PayPal and click on "my account" it shows your recent transactions. If you have a user name and password with them, then you're registered. Although you can send money without registering or creating an account (but they do prompt you to go ahead and create one), so make sure you've done that.

Oooh, did someone say "seed sale"?! A great time to get stuff for next years wintersowing and pansies to start in late summer for fall planting!

Southeastern, NH(Zone 5b)

starlight, I had trees cut down and the guy did it for free so he could take the trees. The big ones are worth money, so don't let nobody trick you into paying them to take them! You are right about the small ones though, and all the darn branches they leave if they take the big ones. They cut all the branches off and leave them, that's why I have a gigantic pile that we still haven't gotten rid of here. Good luck.

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

Lebug . . . thanks for the info on perennials . . . now I don't feel so bad.

I also bought LOTS of seeds from T&M.

Wind - how did you get purple majesty millet to germinate? I have the seeds, I tried - but nothing!

Currently, I am sitting on my bed, sorting out seeds for perennials that I could summer sow (okay, I'm nuts, I admit it!) I am also sorting out seeds for trading . . . are we doing a super swap again?

Meanwhile, keep in mind I am the host for the September Swap - all about fantasy seed names. I already plan to collect Osteosperum "Mixed Giants." I received the seeds in trade and they are the most vibrant orange and yellow flowers!

(sorry, I stupidly forgot to record who sent them - but you know who you are and I am thrilled!)

Greenville, IN(Zone 6a)

Seandor from what I remember, I haven't started any purple majesty yet lol, you plant them 1/4 deep and they like it hot to germinate so put them in the sun or in the ground. Everytime you all talk about plants I think OMG I haven't started that one yet and I'm so busy trying to get the others into the ground I don't think they are going to get started lol I'm gonna B missin out!

I'm planting an orange garden for next year if anyone can save some cool seeds to put in it :) I keep looking at the space that I have for it over there in the back yard and need to get started on that one, just wish I could stick to planting in one garden at a time, how do people do that LOL

I think Suzy is planning on doing the swap again, won't be as big cause we won't have all of those seeds from Carol or Weeze but that may be a blessing in disguise lol I've got a little bit of Carol's purple tansy growing everywhere :) Bless her heart!

North West, OH(Zone 5b)

Thanks for all the Paypal tips guys......boy I sure know how to take a thread off topic don't I?

Right now I am most thrilled with the coral nymph salvia. Thanks to all of you I am growing so many things I've never tried before and that one is my current favorite Next year I'm going to put it with EVERYTHING.

Michaela I didn't have any trouble with the purple majesty although I started mine early inside on a heat mat. I just barely covered the seed with soil, domed it and up they popped.

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

If you go to the winter-sowing forum, there is a seed swap for left over seeds ('cause you can never have too many seeds, right?)

Mount Laurel, NJ(Zone 7a)

I planted the purple millet April 5th and it germinated April 15. Had it outside the whole time in a container.

I would love to try Carol's purple tansy :)))))

I have Margaran's tithonia seedlings sprouting that I direct sowed ~ and the one mirabilis jalapa, 4 o’clock ‘broken colors’ seed from Suzy

It is so dry here, it is a real problem...

Greenville, IN(Zone 6a)

Wind, I hope to be able to collect seeds from the purple tansy this summer and have them for the swap in the fall :)

It's so dry here the ground is cracking, I just wonder how far those cracks go down lol The water sure goes down the cracks when I water lol I watered my veggie garden and my nectar garden last night, I need to get my roots done at 10:30 then I'm watering out front and both sides of the house then my middle garden and the shade garden then the herb garden this afternoon, I need to get my soaker hoses in place LOL Too much watering to do!!! LOL

North West, OH(Zone 5b)

"I need to get my roots done"

You snuck that right in there with all the watering talk and it took me a minute to realize that you most likely aren't talking about tansy roots. LOL!

Mount Laurel, NJ(Zone 7a)

hi, LeBug, that would be great :) thank you! I wish you had a camera so you could post us photos of your gardens...sounds like you have a lot at your place :)

tonight we had serious storms all around us...I drove through a big one too...but here at home...wind blowing...smell of rain in the air...but you could count the drops of rain that fell. Hardly anything!!!!! Drats, we keep getting missed!!! We have odd/even days here to water and we are odd....so tomorrow out with the watering at the end of the day! I hope those in the areas of problem rains and flooding are managing ok. It seems our weather is one extreme or the other now-a-days.

lala, what do you mean...get your roots done?

Suzy's broken colors 4 o'clock is sprouting! Oue rose campion is blooming. Ours is a deep pink color. I transplanted critter's "light pink" rose campion seedlings today from one winter sow container. It yielded 4 hardy clumps :)

Greenville, IN(Zone 6a)

La, I just get to racing about and just put everything together lol My 'roots' is getting my hair colored lol I got everything watered today took all day counting my seedlings too so I didn't get anything planted and have all kinds of seedlings sitting on the table where I transplant at to work on tomorrow then I have to take dad to a doctor's appt. so probably no planting tomorrow either I'm missing this nice weather!

Wind, one of these days with the camera not sure if I would take pictures of my gardens right now, they still have a lot of weeds in them but I'm working on it, I just need more time in the day lol My daturas are looking nice I planted those where I had the compost pile over the winter so you know they will be nice and some purple tansy is there, and verbena bonariais (sp) so it can reseed for next year all it wants down there by the cedar tree. I still need to work on my bed for my hostas and the back middle bed, the shade garden and the front of the house oh my! LOL Thank goodness I think I am done with the nectar garden and herb garden, two down and too much to go yet LOL

I hate driving thru storms sorry you didn't get one at home but I'm glad you made it thru the other one :)

One of my castor beans sprouted today :)

Vancouver, WA(Zone 8a)

Hi everyone! oh, I'm way behind on this thread-we've finally been having decent weather so I've been trying to get caught up on planting stuff. Still have a lot to get done, though.

,So, um, let's see....
Starlight- Digitalis parviflora is the chocolate digitalis. That's one I'd like to try-looks like I might have to go visit T&M myself...

Lala, don't feel too bad about the nasties....I weeded mine, d'oh, and I've even grown them before. But, these didn't start out with the round leaves-the cotyledons looked like a weed I've got all over. I didn't realize until one of the seed pods came up with the seedling....sigh...

Lea, when you say an orange garden, do you mean orange-orange or yellow-orange, or would either be OK?

Lea,

You want an orange garden? Do you have Dutch roots somewhere? You'd fit in nicely here.

Due to the EC Soccer this is what Holland now looks like:

And this is what the average Dutch look like at the moment:

And in the bigger picture:

PS
And yes, I have to admit, it caught me too! And I look awful in orange......

Susybell, don't buy chocolate digitalis, I have a free pack that I got last year I can save for you :)

I like the color orange :) And thought it would be different than having a yellow or red garden, I have to be different lol The yellows oranges are good, all I need are about three or four different plants, I have chinese lanterns and some daylilies to put in there so far.

Now Tunik, that's a little too much orange! LOL

Seale, AL(Zone 8b)

These digitalis I got are up for grabs too. I not gonan grow them and sinc ethey wa sfree I said yep giv eme to me figuring somebody else could us ethem.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

ROFL! Sorry, there was definitely a little mixup with those rose campion seeds... that's the color of my "magenta" ones. The "light pink" ones are almost white from a distance, with a little blush of pink in the center of the bloom. Whoops!

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

BTW, let me know if you don't get any actual light pink ones from that batch of seeds & we'll try again. They really are a pretty color, almost like apple blossoms.

Greenville, IN(Zone 6a)

Star, put your screens in your windows at the top of your windows if you can and that helps more with the heat, if you don't already have them that way, gosh I can't believe you air is out you poor thing!

Critter I love mine they can have any color in them they want, I am going to deadhead them though lol I only got one white one and the rest are a dark pink, just lovely! I like the foliage too but not after they bloomed lol

Mount Laurel, NJ(Zone 7a)

critter, I don't know that there was any mix up...the photo I posted is of rose campion that I already had...yours are still little wee ones yet :)

LeBug, you were right, the purple majesty millet is just now getting a stripe down the center!!! I transplanted one and I still have a clump in the original ws container. The one I transplanted is like 6" tall now and the ws clump still in the container is at 3". It really makes a big diff. to get them out and planted.

Oh, OK wind -- I thought those were rose campion from my "pale pink" seeds, and I was pretty embarrassed! LOL Come to think of it, my rose campion plants never do much the first year, but they just explode with colorful blooms the second summer.

's-Gravenhage, Netherlands(Zone 8b)

Morning all!

Just some pictures to share with you! This is my favorite flower of the moment:

And this is the cutting garden where most seeds I got out of the swap went into. It's just started to bloom!

PS
I could do with multiple photo's per message!

Man-took me a few to catch up this!! Well, I got about 50 seedlings planted out yesterday, will get another 30 or so planted out today...I planted like 50 out a week or so ago-I have the spotted mimilus blooming-it is yellow w/ red speckles:)

I KLOVE my knautis-it was the first perennial I ever bought!!

I can't wait til the seed swap this next year-we will all have so many new things to share:) I am getting a seed rack and light for Xmas if I have to buy them myslef!! That way I can start things early!!

One of the managers at my work just had a house fire and lost most of her garden, so I am giving her some of my left over seeds so she can start anew-I am also splitting some of my larger stuff for her too:)

Southeastern, NH(Zone 5b)

Hi everyone, I want to ask a question and I don't know where would be the best place, so I hope you don't mind if I ask here. Then if no one knows maybe you can help me figure out the best forum for it. I have noticed in a few yards around here, flowers that look similar to either Sweet William (they look slightly daintier than them though) or none so pretty. They are in full bloom right now and they are about 24" tall but I think a little taller. Their leaves and flower color are very similar to the none so pretty (Silene armeria). One of the yards looked like they had the same flowers in white too. I want to get a picture but I don't want people thinking I am spying on them or something. I think they are perennials because these yards I've seen them in don't have a whole lot of other stuff so they don't seem the types to grow hard to find stuff from seed. I really want to find out what they are so I can grow some for behind my stella d'oros I think that is just what my mailbox garden needs. I've been searching and searching every website I can think of and haven't found anything similar. Thank you for listening and any help.

Greenville, IN(Zone 6a)

Gosh Fairy, I'm doing good to get about 20 plants in a day lol That's because I'm pulling weeds as I go though and get side tracked in the other beds too pulling weeds, an never ending job! lol

Tunik, love your pictures, your gardens look so good! What is that pink flower that you said was your favorite right now? I forgot to ask, what is Dutch Roots? Never heard of them :)

Greenville, IN(Zone 6a)

Meredith, not sure what those are but they sure are pretty!

Lucy, hope you see this, my skullcap that you sent me is starting to bloom! cha zam!!! My vine is doing great too! :)

Southeastern, NH(Zone 5b)

That's a picture of none so pretty I found online. I started some of those from seed but they are tiny still and look nothing like that picture that's why I ruled them out. The color is the same as the ones I am trying to figure out though. So I thought I'd put it to give an idea.

Winchester, KY(Zone 6a)

Meridith, that sounds like this dianthus I received in a trade a couple of years ago. I don't know the id, but it is perennial and does look a lot like Sweet William, but daintier in stature.

Thumbnail by gemini_sage
South/Central, FL(Zone 9a)

Lea, I have no doubt that you can grow anything. : ) Once that vine gets going it will be beautiful. You just wait. : )

Southeastern, NH(Zone 5b)

Ooh Gemini those are pretty! I don't think it is those though, because the flowers are in clusters. The only thing I could find that seemed like it was Centranthus ruber it comes in white and the pinkish color, do you think that is it?

Southeastern, NH(Zone 5b)

Here is a pic http://www.robsplants.com/plants/CentrRuber.php It's so hard to tell what something is from the road as your driving by, and the pictures of Centrantus ruber I've seen on the web are all so different. Some of them look red and some look mauve so it's hard to tell.

This message was edited Jun 20, 2008 11:42 AM

Winchester, KY(Zone 6a)

That pic was taken when they had just started blooming. Once they got started the blooms were in clusters like sweet william. Its such a bright color its hard to get good pics of it. Could have sworn I had a pic of them in full bloom, but they must not have turned out clear. I have Centranthus ruber too, and its not so bright, and a little more reddish than pink.

Southeastern, NH(Zone 5b)

Ah ha thats why I didn't think the Centranthus was right, they don't seem quite as pink. How tall do your dianthus get?
