I am growing several herbs in containers on my deck. The basil plant has developed some blackish spots on the leaves and I have no idea what this is or if the basil is safe to eat. I have not used any sprays or insecticides on my herbs (mint, parsley, sage, oregano and basil) and the basil plant is the only one with this problem. Can anyone help me with this?

Could you post a picture? There could be a number of different causes and a picture would help narrow them down.

What do the black spots look like? Are the leaves just getting black spots (flat) or are they fuzzy? A little more description might help us figure out what the problem is.
