Direct sowing watermelons in zone 7a?

Long Island, NY(Zone 7a)

I would like to try watermelons this year for the first time. I read that one can begin them indoors, but I think I may be too late for that. Is there a recommended, tasty variety that I can direct sow and has enough time to ripen in my zone? Or, is it better to buy little plants at a garden center?

We are somewhat limited with space. Can we build a trellis, or is it better to let them sprawl?

You should have plenty of time to direct sow. Try one of the early maturing cultivars. The small melons like Yellow Doll, Sugar Baby can be grown and tied to a fence or somthing similar. Bush versions are more difficult to find but are space savers.

Thanks! I'll plant some seeds this weekend.
