SHARE YOUR POT PLANTINGS FOR PORCH AND PATIO

Kershaw, SC(Zone 8b)

this is the first time with the iresine...my porch is covered but gets about an hour or two of afternoon sun, and then a couple of hours of evening sun...morning sun-nada. I also forgot, in pot #2 there is a no id caladium I picked up, along with a no id begonia...love the black and red begonia...wondering what kind of flowers it will get, if any at all!

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

looks like you bought the same rex black & red and the sliver & purple combo that I picked up last year... they both had flowers but really tiny .... I cut them off because it actually took away from the leaves

the purple one is in this photo

sorry don't have a picture of the red one (or a clear shot) blooming

I think, in regard to container/annual gardening, next to coleus (for variety), rex begonias are starting to really peak my interest. I still have 3 that I managed to overwinter from Logee's.
The black/red one I spotted at a local nursery that tends to get odds and ends in, but they usually only get 3-6 of one variety in...the one I picked up was the only one left, and 2 other people were looking at it...think I almost through an elbow to get it...almost akin to the Cabbage Patch Kids fiasco in the 80's...lol
Pirl inspired me with the "Zodiac" inspired begonias, which I googled, researched, and found suppliers for...that's where I picked up 'Capricorn' from...can't remember the supplier.
Like it alot though!

that's cool ... learn something new everyday with you guys

Onewish Isn't the first begonia "Escargot"?

Kershaw, SC(Zone 8b)

I think 'Escargot' is more green/grey/blue/black. I don't think there is any red hue in it. And, atleast from what I've seen, 'Escargot' has more of a radial spin in the middle of the leaf.

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

I had to look it up... it's Curly Emma

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

Yep your right I only saw it once as a house plant, forgot about the major color green.
Yours is fabooo.

I am bringing all my pots over your house Hem... one of these days I will pre-plan some plantings

Kershaw, SC(Zone 8b)

I have 8 of these planters on the deck rail. They come in sizes that can hold/clasp on to 2x4 material and 2x6 material. I have the 2x6 ones. To be a little different, I did all of the planters differently, with the exception of the 2 middle ones.

First up:

2 white Million Bells
3 magenta/purple wave petunias

hhmmm I think I am over crowding my containers..... but you have some nice combos

Kershaw, SC(Zone 8b)

The reason I didn't/don't pack those particular planters to heavily, is that they are pretty shallow, and get root bound quick if I fill them up like I did the others. I think from the lip, to the bottom is only about 8" or so...if that. AND, the problem I have with them, although I like the fact that they won't tip over in a tornado, is that the middle part that sits on top of the rail, is even more shallow, to about 4-5" or so. If they were deeper, I would easily double up on all of them! lol.

This is my lone Earthbox, with 3 different types/colors of bell peppers in it. The 3 that Paul got me for my bday have not arrived yet :-(

ohhhh there really is only a few inches of soil there..... ok now that makes sense

Kershaw, SC(Zone 8b)

This is a pic of almost all of the planters.

I saw on the earth box site that you can only put 2 tomato plants in each..... is that right?

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

very nice.... you have been busy

Kershaw, SC(Zone 8b)

Yes. Honestly, you can probably get away with 3 of the determinate type of tomatoes, but only 2 of the indeterminates. And, from my experience last year with the zucchinis believe what they tell you...lol.

The garden center that is about 1 mile away from my home, sells Earthboxes already potted up, last year, at xmas time, they had one in their green house, and it was still producing cherry tomatoes.

The plants take a little bit to establish, but one day you look out and are like, "HOLY COW" they seem to grow in inches on a daily basis.

It only took me forty years to grow these Rodys....and then we built the patio.

A Southeast view. Guess where the next huge arbor is going to be built. The vine to cover it is allready planted. The back of that house is going to be toast soon. :)

A Northwest view. Stacking pots one week beyond first picture. The brick are dated about 1850 recycled from downtown to this patio at ten cents apiece. The blue stone is native slate. The family did all of the finish work.
