spacing japanese spurge

Am planting japanese spurge(pachysandra terminalis) to cover a large, shady area in my backyard. I've been reading that it spreads rapidly, and can be invasive. My question is then, why does everything I read say to space it 6-12 inches apart when planting if it is going to spread? Can I plant them more like 24 inches apart, and still have them fill in?
