Flickers also like suet

My bluebird fledglings are now feeding themselves for the most part, but Papa still brings an occasional worm. The second clutch is due to hatch tomorrow, so the first bunch had better be ready to fend for themselves.

I agree with Pelle...great pics everyone and thanks for posting!

Thanks for the new thread Angele, it is always a pleasure to see the birds of NM!

The American Goldfinch are all over the place and I shot this through a window!

Awesome shots everyone. It is so great to see all the different bird species. Rough guess here, but I doubt I have seen more than 2% of the birds posted here with my own eyes. Dellrose, of all the birds you posted I've only seen the American Goldfinch.

It was fun watching these 2 Orioles yesterday. I've got 2 pics of them to share -

Thumbnail by angele

This one shows the behavior that made it so fun to watch them. Instead of flying off to let the other one eat the one just kept swinging down out of the way and then back up again for her turn. She did it repeatedly. :-)

Nice photography, Angele - love the way the shadows play on the Orioles!

This male Goldfinch looks a little cranky!

Rose... love the shot of the Redstart!

Angele...those beautiful shots of the orioles!

The Pileated Woodpecker came back this morning! First up he ran into the Red -bellied Woodpecker...

Then Mr. Downy Woodpecker showed up and was quite surprised I think! (this one is blurry)

nanny, you are so luckey to have all those woodpeckers!!!!!!!!!!! GM :)

Gladwin, MI(Zone 5a)

Wow, wow, wow, what great pictures.
I just love them all!

Notice how little the normally large flicker looks along the PWP. I seen them hundreds of times and they still amaze me.

We have lots of woodpeckers here, but I have never seen a red headed until today.
Long shot of this guy on our lightpole. (zoom and crop) Can you see it? Am I correct that it is a red headed?

How cool to have birds feed out of your hand.

I got the hummingbirds real close last year, but never other birds.

cpartschick - that is definitely the red-headed woodpecker. I have one hanging about in my front yard also. He is so beautiful. Sometimes he flies down onto the ground for a few moments, and then goes back to his "lookout" post on the tree. I think he keeps an eye out for insects moving on the ground and just goes after them. They really are a very beautiful bird.

That must have been one thirsty hummer!

wonderful pics everybody!

Marshfield, MO(Zone 6a)

I didn't get a picture, he was way too fast, but the other day there was a roadrunner in my back yard. The dogs were going crazy barking at something, I figured another deer, and went to look, and there he was, running across the back yard, too bad I didn't have cam in hand!

Gladwin, MI(Zone 5a)

So exciting, everyone is seeing new birds!

Gladwin, MI(Zone 5a)

Oh and thanks CMoxon for the verification on the red head. He sure looked different from the downys and hairy woodpeckers.

The Ozarks, MO(Zone 5b)

Nanny...you are the WP Queen!! I am sooo jealous!!

Cparts..and you are the WPPrincess with that Red Headed!!

MaryinLa..Cool shot of the Hummer and I am on the lookout for the Roadrunner! You are only about 35 miles south of us and I know I saw one crossing the road several months ago. Everyone thought I was nuts they have been spotted around the state so I am on the lookout!!

GG...Don't cha just love the Goldfinches and their sweet song?

Angele..Your Orioles are gorgeous!!

The Ozarks, MO(Zone 5b)

Forgot to mention that I took a pic while walking the dogs yesterday of what I thought was one of the Indigo Buntings...just a quick snap and the pic turned out awful...however when I checked it on the computer it was a Blue Grosbeak! Uggg....I should never assume!!

Marshfield, MO(Zone 6a)

I had lots of both last year, dellrose, sometimes at the same time, I would have buntings and blue grosbeaks, let me see if I can find some of last years pics. This pic had buntings and rose breasted at the same time, couldn't find buntings and blue grosbeaks in the same picture, but they were both coming at the same time.

Alright, now Mary! That first shot is not even fair! I've seen exactly one rose breasted grosbeak all spring, and you've got a yard full only a few miles from me.

Very nice. What's the secret attractant? The one thing I notice is that it looks like you're scatter feeding on open ground, and my feeding area (well attended, just not by grosbeaks) is under some cedars.

The Ozarks, MO(Zone 5b)

Mary..how cool is that! This is my first spring of birding and I am finding out that this a wonderful birding area!! How long did the Buntings and Grosbeaks stay with you?

Marshfield, MO(Zone 6a)

Those pics were from last year, and I had found a finch blend seed that I scattered on the ground. I can't find that blend this year, though. I don't remember how long they stayed, but it didn't seem long.

OMG! Rose, you have a Yellow Warbler!!! I have been looking for them since I moved from a place (Little Rock, Arkansas) that had 100' of privet about 30' tall that they would migrate to every fall in waves of 3 - 5 days for each sex/age. It was like a gift of God, and I have never seen them again in the last 40 years. I sure hope to see some at my feeders this year or next. (I'm out-of-my-mind-happy to see your pic!) I think I'll run over to the nursery and buy some more shrubs for them. :-)
