Now what were we talking about?

Fairfield County, CT(Zone 6b)

Anything and everything except what Dave don't 'low. :)

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

My mowers were just here and i guess one of the guys is new and inexperienced. He just weedwacked an entire area of perennials. To the ground. I just emailed the boss. Unbelievable.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

I can't express how shocked I am at this news.
Did he hire "day workers" with no knowlege of plants?
Aren't the beds obvious?
I would like to be a fly on the wall when you reach th boss.
Can't imagine any excuse for this.

Questa, NM(Zone 5b)

Aaaaaaaah! Victor, that's awful!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

He does seem to have different workers all the time. Can't imagine what this guy was thinking.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

Do you think he hires off the street corner.?
I heard illegals will work for $2.00 per hour.
Short sighted on his part when they take out a garden that's worth many booquu bucks.
Not to mention the hours of labour.

Greensboro, AL

People who mow grass for a living are not likely to know what perennials are. I am amazed that your perennials weren't wacked before, Victor. What can you do?.

As you know I was a curator of a house museum here for some 20 years. The property was on 16 acres - about half had been wooded pasture and the rest had been landscaped into various little gardens including a victorian rose garden and a boxwood garden. Most of my time there was spent trying to defend the plants against assaults by prisoners sent in to clean up with no authorization, and city workers who just bulldozed away. The city workers even brought back packs with round up sprayers for the roses.

devastating.

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

Victor-you e-mailed? I would have counted to 100 then called him so he could hear the outrage in my voice.

Questa, NM(Zone 5b)

Round Up on roses?! I think I'm gonna faint.

Fairfield County, CT(Zone 6b)

What ever you do DON'T TELL KASSIA!

Greensboro, AL

Some forms of stupidity/ignorance just make you sick for the rest of your life. But what do you do to protect plants that you have planned and worked on, or in my case some body in 1800 planned and worked on?

The world seems to be organized around mowing grass. Doesn't anybody know anything about gardens?

Fairmont, WV(Zone 6a)

Oh no, Victor!! :( I'm with Flowerjen, I'd have called the mowing company and given them a piece of my mind. I probably wouldn't have counted to 100, either. In my limited experience NOBODY knows what a perennial looks like except for people who actually garden. Goodness knows DH has whacked his share of plants...but that's another thread. :)

One of the adjuncts in my department was fired over a political squabble and as a parting shot, somebody took his baby plants from the school greenhouse. How nasty is that.

Fairfield County, CT(Zone 6b)

Maybe you need to put a miniature electric fence around all your gardens. Try and mow that, sucka!

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Victor, im so very sorry!! I would of called and yelled,,,,no question about it!!
I do like Yanks idea though.....hee hee hee.

belleville, NJ(Zone 6a)

Wow! That is awful. Will they pull through?
i feel your pain at least a little, because that happened again and again here with the landscapers the landlords hire. Though mostly for me it was annuals. i think i replanted cosmos 3 or 4 times last year. And every time i'd get 4 o'clocks started, they'd get whacked or pulled - the last time either by the landlady herself or her nephew... (and they were behind a little wire fence...)
But on your own land!?!?! That is even lousier... Sorry...

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Thanks all. Yes, it's a real bummer - some curb appeal now! I know the boss very well and if it was a shrub or something valuable, I would have definitely had him pay me for it. They will grow back - I think it was a few stokesia, some coreopsis and possibly a geranium Rozanne or two. I will have to stick some annuals there I guess.

Questa, NM(Zone 5b)

Well, you seem very calm. Can we have pictures of the massacre?

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I'm calmer now. Expletives were flying before. I am still upset, but stuff happens. I'll try to get a photo. It's still early so the foliage will certainly grow back and they may possibly still flower too.

Greensboro, AL

Well maybe lessons have been learned and it wont happen again. That would be a big step.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Let's hope so. If it happened again I would be quite a bit more upset. That reminds me - I need to check the entire garden for any other possible damage.

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

Will you be mowing your own lawn from now on??

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

No - I gave up on that two years ago. I plan to check out synthetic lawns. Someone I know has one and I want to see how it feels. Supposed to be pretty close to natural feel - unlike the early ones. Great not to mow, water, fertilize and, best of all, not have any intrude the beds. It is no doubt expensive up front. I might try it just near my pool.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Forgot to say hello to Pam! Haven't seen you post in a while. Good to see you again.

S of Lake Ontario, NY(Zone 6a)

Sorry Victor! I just have a puppy to destroy my garden.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Thanks. Does he mow?

S of Lake Ontario, NY(Zone 6a)

No mowing, but I came home from work yesterday to find a nice hole dug right next to a newly planted JM. Had to walk away so I didn't yell at the puppy. Figured it was too late to teach her not to do it.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Oh boy...

Greensboro, AL

Yes. You have to catch the dog in the act, or they just don't know what you are talking about.

I trained my dog to training pads. Now she thinks any thing that looks like a training pad is the place to go. She is a smart dog, but there are some chains of dog logic I forgot to explore.

belleville, NJ(Zone 6a)

i have coreopsis "nana"rooted and ready to go if you'd like some. But you probably have a niftier kind. Uh, i have "american dream...? american beauty...?" (some pink kind) and zagreb from Thom from the RU i could divide i think. (And i seem to remember Carrie has a lot of "Moonbeam"...)

S of Lake Ontario, NY(Zone 6a)

I later found out that DH caught her in the act and made her stop, but he didn't repair the damages.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Thanks Amy, but this one comes up in other places - I can just transplant some.

Fairmont, WV(Zone 6a)

Hi Victor! Yeah, I tend to come and go at DG depending on how busy I get with other things. I turned in my final grades Monday and I am now ON VACATION!!! *doing my little happy dance* It's amazing how much work I can do in the garden when I'm not distracted by little things like my job. :)

I hope the rest of your garden is OK!

pam

Went to Walmart and on the way out I saw a bunch of plastic plant trays. The guy was checking slip for stuff going out the gate. I asked him "what happens to those trays"? He said they go to recycling. I asked can people have them and he said "what do you want one"? I said I don't know what if I want them all.........he said you probably can have them, just go ask the garden manager.

They were all different size trays for 3, 4, 5, 6 inch rounds and squares. Heck it is better than having to buy them if they have the size you need.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

SCORE 1 for you Sherrie

It can be a score for anyone that needs trays. Thay have to get rid of them as they cant go back into a GH or nusery. Unless they had a huge washing process. They wouldnt take them back as it might contain a bug, fungus or something. No big out fit would even wash that amount or take any chances. They buy new.

For people that like to grow plants - they can be FREE................ :-)

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

WooHoo for Sherrie!
That's good to know. I'll have to check with Mary at my local Wal*Mart. It's nice to have a friend in Department 18.

Medway, MA(Zone 5b)

. . . I caught a toad day before yesterday . . . put him in my fenced-in garden. I don't know how many times in the past I've stepped on or almost stepped on them all over the yard!

Greensboro, AL

That must mean you have a healthy yard!

When I moved here, my neighbor said the toads had gone. There had been none on this hill for more than 10 years. Cotton poison, he said, was the reason. No cotton was grown specifically here, but of course at one time all the farm land was in cotton, now in nothing.

Last year I did find a little green toad in the green house. i hope he had a family and will continue to live there!
