What tool of my husband's could I use to dig out a couple holes in my hay bale? Using my hands and fingers takes too long.Arthritis.

Here, in fact is a whole forum on Strawbale Gardening http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/f/strawbale/all/

I used a serrated steak knife last year. Worked great. I just used it to saw out a portion as big as I wanted for a hole and pulled out that section, then plunked plant and its surrounding potting soil in the hole, tamped it down. If the section you pull out comes out too deep, use more potting soil to fill in for the correct depth.
