I bought these beautiful deep purple morning glory seeds, (not the icky weed). I noticed they have a thick shell. Anytime I have ever tried to grow these, I soak them and nick them as directed and they don't make it.
Should I just direct plant them in the ground?
Morning Glory
Nick them, wrap them in a wet coffee filter or paper towel, then put them in a plastic baggie. You should have sprouts within 24-72 hrs, then plant them.
Are you planting them directly outdoors? I sowed mine indoors about 8 weeks ago.
The 'Grandpa Ott' morning glories I grew this year sprouted without nicking or soaking. I filled 3" peat pots with Miracle Gro Organic Choice potting soil, watered them from the bottom up, and waited. They grew like crazy as long as I kept them nice and moist and gave them some light.
Your mileage may vary, of course. I know the conventional wisdom with MGs is to soak and/or nick the seed.
