Pruning a honeysuckle vine

Watertown, WI(Zone 5a)

I have a Dropmore honeysuckle that looks a little weird this year. It has new growth at the base, new growth at the top of the trellis...and nothing in the middle but the vines leading up to the top. So, the bottom and top are leafed out and the middle is not.

How should I prune this vine? Do I trim off everything down to the new growth at the base and eliminate the stuff that's growing at the top?

If I do trim the top growth off, is it possible to propagate a cutting for my mom's and sister-in-law's gardens?

I've pruned my coral honeysuckle as needed through the summer with no ill effects to the overall plant. I would go ahead and prune down to the bottom level of leaves. Honeysuckle roots well from soft cuttings but I've never had any luck with woody cuttings. I cut lengths that will easily fit in a quart jar, clip all but the top two or three sets of leaves off, dip them in rooting hormone, stick them in the jar of water and wait until they have good roots before planting them outside.

I think I'll go ahead and trim off the top, then. It's kinda sad since the top is so bushy and lush, but...it just looks weird to have nothing growing in the center. I'll try to root something from the cuttings at the top and see how it works out. Thanks, NatureLover! :)

You're very welcome. I hope it all roots for you.
