Hi ya'll. I have never composted before but would like to start. I have begun throwing my leftovers up against a privacy fence in the corner of my yard. I am in a neighborhood with relatively small yards. Do i need to put the stuff in a container or will it be ok right there on the ground. Will it start to stink and bug the neighbors? Also it is with about 20 feet of a newly planted perennial bed. Is that bad? will it attract critters that will get my plants? Any help would be appreciated.
Do i need a container to compost?
Welcome to composting! That is one of the very best things you can do for your soil. No you don't need a container just make sure you keep it turned every so often to help it decompose faster. A working compost pile should not have a noticeable odor so your neighbors will be fine. Criiters should not be a problem just don't throw any old kitchen scraps in it except for green veggies, coffee grounds, eggshells etc. ie no meats or bones. Good luck.

Hello,
My compost is in the corner of my yard, up against my wooden privacy fence, can't be too good for the fence, but dosen't hurt anything. If you don't put any meat scraps in there , you should be ok with the critter situation. I've really never had much trouble with smell, just try to keep an even balance of wet/dry stuff. Hmm, that reminds me , i need to turn mine.
It won't hurt any plants. Not bad to be next to your bed. I have Daylilies growing right beside mine, LOL. Look pretty good too!
Thanks!!!! I would have never even thought about throwing meat scraps in there but I was getting ready to ask about the egg shells. I threw a dozen of them in there this morning :-)
