I'm heading up to help our grandchildren start a garden and I would like them to be successful.
They are young (6 & 3) and anxious to grow beans & tomatoes. What a wonderful thing to have them want!
Their home has a large amount of oak trees and I wasn't sure if this could poise a problem.
Thanks for your help.
Are there any problems when planting near oak trees?
The biggest problem I see would be sun--beans and tomatoes both need full sun so if there's shade from the trees that could interfere. Also if you're too much in the root zone of the oaks, the tree may steal a lot of the water and nutrients and make the veggies not grow as well. But I think if you find an area that gets enough sun for the plants to be happy, they'll probably be far enough from the trees that they'll be OK. You could always grow these in containers too, that may be easier if there are a lot of trees around, that way if you've got a sunny deck or patio you could put the containers there.
Thank you for your time. I'll have the children start a patch out in the sun. Their Dad was making a raised garden for them. I can remind him to place it out in the sun.( He's my son so I'm sure I can get away with suggesting!)
Have a grand weekend.
