In zone 6 how fast does it spread? Also, does it die back completely to the ground in winter?
Baptisia australis
I'm not sure how much it should spread, but I can tell you that I have been nurturing a plant here for 3 years and it has only spread to about 6 inches. I have not seen a flower on it either. It's my understanding that this is a plant that grows from a very deep taproot. It spends several growing seasons developing that root. Once established, it should start to spread. This year should be the year I get some spread from this plant. We'll see!!!
Chris
I just noticed you asked about it dying to the ground each year. It does, and you'll want to mark where you have it planted. It is often one of the last plants to emerge from the ground in the winter.
